NZ: Silencer on 7mm mag Rem Rifle
« on: September 23, 2010, 12:38:31 PM »
Outfitter for Red Deer hunting in New Zealand  uses silencers on his 7mm Rem Short Mag.  Say's it's as quiet as a .22 LR and has same recoil as .223.  Interesting idea.  No ear splitting blast and game is not disturbed.  He claims one shot kills.

It might be cool, but I am not certain you can hunt with a silencer, and they are even legal in most areas.

In NYS they are considered a class D felony.

265.02 Criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree.
A  person  is  guilty  of criminal possession of a weapon in the third
  degree when:

Subdivison 2:  (2) Such person possesses any explosive or incendiary bomb, bombshell,
firearm silencer, machine-gun or any other firearm or weapon  simulating
a machine-gun and which is adaptable for such use; or

In the NYS CPL the definition of a silencer is:   2.  "Firearm  silencer"  means  any  instrument, attachment, weapon or appliance for causing the firing of any gun, revolver, pistol  or  other firearms  to be silent, or intended to lessen or muffle the noise of the firing of any gun, revolver, pistol or other firearms.

Therefore, in NYS it is illegal to possess a silencer at anytime on a firearm.

In indiana it's not a big deal to get a silencer.  Lots of guys at the range have them on long range rifles.  I shot a guys rifle that had one and I was simply amazed!  It was a 308 and he had already zeroed it for 1000 yards and asked me if I wanted to give it a try.  Of course I said yes and I was blow away about how nice it was to have the recoil reduced to almost nothing.  No muzzle blast or anything like that.  There was still the sonic crack of the bullet going down range, but just teh reduction in recoil would make purchasing one well worth the hassle.  I don't have one myself because I don't want to pay the money or go through the hassle, but they are sweet.

Teddy12b,

Do you mean muzzle break and not silencer?

Nope, I'm talking about silencers.

If your willing to pay for the class 111 lincense you can get one too. It`s just the cost that keep me from getting one.

Igm270, if you live in NZ then I say go for it! I think it's a great idea.
If you live in the states, as mentioned, go through the proper channels.
Sometimes we forget that we have several members that live across the pond/ponds ;D

Sorry folks a bit late on this one but the item in use here is a sound Moderator and not a silencer. The different terms relate to the amount of noise reduction. Also a Sound Moderator does reduce perceived recoil and it's often, especially with calibres like .27 and below, possible to watch the bullet strike home. The drawback is increased weight and length even with the Reflex over barrel type.

The use of sound moderators for hunting and deer stalking is now common here in the UK but for range use there are attendant problems like heat build up and mirage. You won't shoot a 40 or 80 round string without serious heat build up in the moderator. 10 shots through a 25-06 and the moderator is too hot to touch. There is also the problem of corrosion if you leave the moderator attached as it cools it draws the air into it and down into the barrel dragging the left over elements for combustion back into the barrel where is condenses and rots the barrel. As several owners had found out to their cost. The moderator should be removed straight after firing and the attachment threads kept greased to prevent the moderator for sticking and galling or simply rusting to the barrel.

A big +1 on what Brithunter said.  You can buy covers for the suppressors as well to combat the heat/mirage that they give off.

Although covers do reduce mirage and also some sound mods do ring and the covers dampen that the problem with heat build up is still there and it transmits the heat back to the barrel. I have to really slow down my fire rate when load testing using the sound mod compared to shooting the rifle without it. Oh an another point that folks forget or don't realise it the POI change with the mod removed if zeroed with it on and of course the opposite is true.

Having a lump of metal screwed to the muzzle even if the reflex type like my Wildcat P8 it effects the barrels harmonics and one some light profile barrels with minimal floating can make the barrel contact the stock. With a bedded barrel it will increase the pressure upon the point of contact which may or may not effect the rifles grouping. One needs to bear this in mind and test for it. Very occasionally a rifle will show none of these signs and put the bullets with mod on and off into the same group. Your lucky if this happens  ;).
