Micro Hunter 308: Got any good youth loads developed?
« on: September 23, 2010, 04:45:57 PM »
I am getting one of these for my son and will be writing an article on it...

I am looking to develop a good reduced load for him
I know about Hodgdon's published youth loads using H4895

Just seeing if anyone has developed a a good load or 2 for a Micro Hunter?

He's been shooting a 243 for several years (he's 13) and can shoot well, taken deer and hogs.

This is just going to be a fun project for us to do together

Thanks

I had one of those up until last year and it shot the Remington Express 150 Core-loct factory ammo really well. It had a bit of muzzle jump to it even with 150 grain loads. If it's for a youngster I would use some 125 reduced recoil rounds if you can find them and the shoot well. I never tried them.

I am compiling data for reduced loads to work up, looking at 125 Sierra Prohunter flat base at about 2500 FPS
that's comparable to the managed recoil load from Remington
He's 13 and can shoot a 20ga fine, and can shoot hot 243 loads fine

I want to do an experiment, say 125 at 25-2600 vs a 150 at 2300

thanks for the feedback

I cant speak to the 308 Sierra bullet load because I used a 7 mm -08. I used Sierra's 130 grain single shot pistol bullet when they made them at about 2500 fps for my two kids. Sierra's 130 grain sspb was made to perform at reduced velocity from pistol barrels. They had excellent performance out of that 7mm-08. My son is currently shooting up the remaining supply. I told him when theyre gone we'd work him up a grown up load. Cant beat those Sierra bullets. Give em a try. I got alot of help from Paul Box at Sierra too. Great company. I did this way before Remington came out with Managed Recoil loads. Thats the beauty of handloading. Good luck!

thanks
funny you should mention the 7mm08

today I was thinking that perhaps that would a better cartridge for this project

heck, the 85g Barnes at 3280 FPS out of the 243 leaves little room for improvement
