25/20 contender
« on: September 24, 2010, 02:39:09 AM »
iwas wondering if any of you are shooting the 25/20 in a contender carbine,i have one and i cant seem to make it shoot all that great.i've tried the 75 gr speer,86 gr rem and the 87 gr speer spitzer.the 87 has done the best so far.i've tried powders ranging from lilgun to 322 with standard and b.r primers and various seating depths.i do my testing @60 yds and the groups are usually around 3" if you want to call them groups.they usually resemble verticle stringing but on a 45 deg angle with one going high maybe the next going low nothing consistantly one way or the other.i always push my shoulder back so there is no tension on the brass but not exessive headspace on the other end.tight brass tends to produce vert string in my other bottleneck bbl's.so,what are you all doing to get yours to group?

Sorry I don't have a 25-20 myself,

But I would start by not setting the shoulder back on your brass and see what that does. Also do you have a different forend you can try? Or maybe just "float" the one you have with either washers or O rings? How "clean" are you getting the bore in that barrel, and does the crown look good? Did you buy the barrel new or used? Is this a TC barrel or aftermarket?

thanks for the reply slim,i've tried not setting the shoulder back and that made the situation worse.i'm using a short pistol bbl forend with only the rear screw in place sitting on an o-ring with an oversize hingepin.the bbl is a new 21" tapered custom shop. crown looks good.i got one of those new redfield 2-7 to put on top because they're nice and small.the bbl has roughly 175 rounds through it.saturday was good i tried 10 grains of 322 behind the 75 gr speer it shot into 1.25" with no stringing shots just a nice little cluster.
