Lee 310 gr. flat nose Deer Loads?

I have been using the Lee 310 gr bullet since it came out in a mold in my redhawk with great results on everything from deer to water buffalo. If you put it in the lungs or shoulder it has done great for me. I use 21 gr of  H110 with a large pistol magnum primer. the velocity has been around 1250 to 1275 fps gas checked with very good accuracy. I have never recovered a bullet ( even on two large water buffalo) and all of the animals left a good blood trail and did not go any further than 100 yards most less than this. I shot this bullet for a long time in a DW 744VH8 with a Bushnell Trophy 2x6x32. The DW has a 1-16" twist and stabilized the big bullet just fine and was very accurate out to 150yds. My hunting load was max charges of W296, obtained thru testing. The DW is a large very stout gun as is your Ruger and the loads they will take would make the S&W guys cringe. The large flat nose on this bullet does more dammage than a RN or SWC style. Penetration on a whitetail is not an issue as it will pass completely thru an average Eastern front to rear on a facing shot. Go for it, do some load work and find one that shoots best. Sure you don't need it, but so what. I have alot of things I don't need.

  I don't know why you NEED a bullet THAT big . I've killed whitetails with 200 grain .44mag bullets.! A big hole in the wrong place isn't a good thing. I wish you great success with this, as I have tried similar things in MY youth. Now age and health concerns limit me to milder shooting.

I'm in the "no need to go that big for deer" camp too.   200-215 gr bullets make for some great all year plinking, carry, small game and target of opportunity loads.  Haven't shot a deer yet with them, just other stuff,  but see absolutely no reason that a 215 gr LSWC wouldn't be an ideal deer bullet.  Maybe the ideal deer bullet.


One load for all purposes and all year yields a lot of confidence and ability once deer season rolls around.

I use hard cast 300 grain flatpoints in my .45 Colt 4 5/8 Blackhawk over a healthy dose of 2400.  No deer has ever walked away from that.  The last buck I killed with that load came close to my tree stand and layed down.  At the shot, he got to his feet and then immediately lay down again.  Pass through, no expansion.  My opinion is that a big bore bullet should be heavy, hard, and flat nosed.
