'bout 1.5" and slow too!!!! I had already planted about 400 acres of plots early and got about .5" on them and they are coming on but I bet they jump after last night!!!! The deer will be real happy cause after I planted all the pastures and grass patches, we sold the cows!

Well let's see:

First Day of Bowseason: Parker Crossbow
First day of ML Season: CVA Optima 209 Magnum
First day of General Gun Season: CVA Optima or Remington 141 35 Remington

I do have a 30-30 Topper that will get blood this year and of course the 22 Hornet Topper will knock a few deer and hogs down.

Daman

I forgot to mention that opening day of turkey season is the same day as general gun season. That will call out the 870 Express Magnum 20 gauge with Truglo Gobble Stopper Extreme and Remington Nitro #5's. Saw 12 long beards Friday evening! Can't wait for some fresh turkey breast!!!

last year the only thing I saw (legal to shoot anyways) was during the last rays of dusk, and I didn't want to take a sloppy shot in thick brush in low light (catch some branches to deflect the shot, severely wound but fail to humanely kill) on a small doe at that.  this time I'm using a .45-70 with the sierra .458 bullet, 60grs varget, win primer, starline case to bust one up bad from any angle.  that load goes through at least seven inches of fresh-cut oak so a deer is done.  I just have to go sit up high in a tree and wait for it (I'm afraid of heights!)  :o  I'm zeroed for fifty.  roughly 6 inches high at 25, six low at 100.  I don't know why it drops so fast, maybe the hollowpoint is dragging that bad?  I'm counting on it to do the same to meat though.

I'm not entering the big buck contest at work but I am going for big hole.

I have to change my earlier post...For MT season I will have the Handi in -06 as the starter and the Handi 30-30 along incase there is a "wardrobe" malfunction. Son will be using his 45-70 handi, Daughter .270 bolt gun on the stand, or the handi 30-30 if she has to walk much. And this time there isn't any budget room to add this line like I did last time "unless a handi needs a home between now and then" .... So these are the updated guns of choice.
For MN season all above are the same for the kids but I will be using my Handi 45-70 until it gets something down. :)
Have a fun safe season! thejanitor

No luck getting the 45-70 manlicher bloody. The clover field next to the hunting camp is owned by someone else and for the first time in seven years they were up hunting this last weekend and they get first dibs on the field when they are up. A pickup with Jersey plates was parked at my spot on state land Saturday and Sunday. Watched one cross a brush hogged trail onto posted property, but the angle I would have been shooting put a house behind the deer so I couldn't take the shot. My buddy Jody did get one Saturday afternoon so we had fresh back strap for dinner and good fellowship with good friends all weekend, so it was a good weekend.

You stole my gun!!!! I mean that is my 30-30 less the rust and beat to hell and back stock!!!! I even have the same Weaver rings!!! Nice gun, I wish mine would have been taken care of before I got it! It is rusty and dinged up, but she shoots straight!

Woke up intending to pick something. Took a shot with the Hornet at a clay pigeon at 50-60 yards in the yard. Hunting type shot, offhand, crouch, looking around a tree. It did not break. Somewhat annoyed, I grabbed the 243SL with the Tamer stock and Bushnell 4x POS and went to the range. Found a forearm to put on it as I had robbed the existing one for another project. Had 5 min to get there, 10 min to sight and 5 min to get back home. I put up an NC black dot at 100 yards, and fired 9 shots fairly quickly. The last 3 made a group about 1.5MOA, about 1 inch over the dot. Never hit the dot. That is about zero at 25 and 250 according to my charts. With an SL and a hot barrel, that will do. The range was empty. A guy had been there for a half hour the day before then empty for a week. I found a sighting in target in the garbage can that had over 100 shots on it, all numbered. Got home and went to retrieve the clay pigeon. It had a perfect Hornet size hole drilled through the center. Guess I have 2 choices for Saturday.

.308 Handi Rifle topped with a BSA Cateye 3.5-10 x 50....
I've had to sell of a couple of rifles since this past winter but I still have a .308 Handi to hunt with......I had only shot paper till yesterday...
I got a small spike with the .308.....and it was a bang-flop at around 80 yds.....no chasing this one.
When I skinned him out and pulled the hide past the front shoulder, a chunk of his heart fell out of the hole left by the 150gr Corelokt bullet....there really wasn't a whole lot of it left....
I figured the heart was gone when he dropped like he did......
I think this is a gun I'll kill lots of deer with in the future.......and very 'handi' in the tree stand.....
Happy hunting to all!!!!

Tomorrow 3 generations will be hunting on my property for the first time. My father for the first time in 20 yrs.  will be hunting in the woods with his trusty ss stevens in 12 ga w/ high velocity sluggers out of a pop-up blind.  My son will be with me overlooking our wide open deer plot of corn, rye, and soybeans from our sky hootch.  He will be using my handi 270 while I will be using my savage 300 win mag to reach out to the far edges.  I was surprised that my father picked the Shotgun over his old Ruger 44 mag carbine, either one will kill a deer just as dead - but its his choice.

my 45-70 did NOT penetrate through the buck.  it was a big 9-pt at about 40yds, shot behind the shoulder.  the meat on the entry wound was jellied all around the half-inch hole going in, tubes coming off the heart and a lung were busted, opposite shoulder did stop the bullet, but the upper leg, shoulder blade and ribs were all blown to bits.  I still haven't shredded what's left of the upper leg/shoulder to get the bullet.. so I don't know if it opened up wide or fragmented.  despite the damage, he did slowly and stiffly trot about 50yds before laying down.

on the plus side, I did get talked into entering the "big buck" contest last minute friday (the deadline) and probably won it... still waiting on two guys to bring theirs in.
