.243 winchester and core lok ammo
« on: September 25, 2010, 03:00:01 PM »
wow did i get a deal at my local dicks store. Gander mountain was advertizing win and rem 30-30 ammo for 7.99 after there and the manufacturers rebates. It was 10.99 for .243,.270, 06 and .308. Dicks matched the price of 7.99 instead of 10.99 so neadless to say I picked up 400 rounds for 160.00. plus I will get the 5 dollars per two box rebate. Works out to 30 cent a round. One rebate per household so my neighbors are all signed up for one. Sale ends tmor so if near a Dicks store give it a try. My .243 reloading stuff will be getting dusty for a while I quess.Forgot to mention the win 100 grain shoots clover leafs out of my gun at 100 yards.

Back in the 80's I use to shoot factory loaded 100gr core-lokts,  they always shot very well but exit wounds left a lot to be desired.  Many times exit wounds would be dime-sized and ocasionally the exit wound was so small I couldn't get my little finger in there.  They always killed but the deer always run 100yds or a little more before piling up.  Most of these deer were shot within 50yds so I always thought the bullet should have expanded alot better.  The factory core-lokts never let me down but they seemed a little too tough for behind the shoulder shots on white-tail.  Of course this was 25 years ago and perhaps remington fixxed this problem years ago.  Dave

ive had a lot better luck with them i guess dave,at one time starting 20 sum years ago a 243 model 7 short barrel rifle was my main deer gun.i shot maybe 20 plus deer of all different sizes at different ranges. lung shots always had a quarter size exit hole especially if it hit a rib, and tons of blood trail.shoulder shots in heavy cover they always dropped on the spot, nose plowing dirt.the only bad shot i made with it was a qaurtering away shot on the run hit the buck in the elbow, made the deer so sick he stopped  twice in 100 yrds and i nailed him in the back of the neck where he dropped on the spot.i was always really happy with them and still consider that rifle the killingest rifle i own.am shooting a 06 and a 6.5x55 now but they just dont seem to hammer them like the 243 always did.

Don"t understand why people keep knocking the .243 as a deer rifle. Is there anyway to settle the issue. I've shot a number of deer with a .243 and remington corlock 100 grn bullets and all were drt, no tracking required. I've also had luck with 85 grn bullets, handload.
My last outing I killed 4 BIG bucks(200 lbs or better) 4 shots 4 bucks one was at 300yds the others around 200

Darn it the last box of Rem Core Lockt I brought was just before Christmas and it cost $64 for a 20 round box of .280 Rem 165 Grn. Just goes to show what rip off merchanys Edgar Bros our Rem importers are  >:(.

Edit:-  Needless to say not being a millionaire I cannot afford to shoot remington factory ammunition.

Well Brit move to the colonies where ammo costs a lot less  ;D. I know you can't. But I bet you don't get to practice much do you?

How's your dad doing?

Pastorp,

dad is doing quite well thanks. He is now on warferin to thin the blood as he got a clot on his lung whilst in hospital and it's settling down now.

As for shooting I don't do too badly, good job I don't smoke and drink, was at the range on Sunday and will be again this Sunday as we have the annual small bore iron sight comp. Only at 26 yards but it's a bit of fun. Two weeks later is the iron sight full bore annula comp at 75m (82 yards. the range is an ex RAF weapon test one hence the short distance. Hopefully the new 100m range will open this summer that's only 10 miles from here ratehr than the 37 to where I currently go.

Meanwhile I have got the 280 back home so can get on with getting her finished and buit up:-

Once I get the barrel proeply screwed home, I had it pulled after proofing so the receiver and barrel was blacked seperately so the barrel tenon and threads are blacked as it the breech face and fnort of the reciever. I shall apply some Loctite 243 to the threads when I screw it on which should seal any moisture out for good. Then it's get down to fire forming the brass.

My brother and I started hunting with "our 243" in 1969.  At the time, we lived on Grandad's ranch outside of Powell, Wyoming.  Since the rifle was a Remington, we reasoned that it would shoot Remington ammo best of all.  We never lost a single animal and our list of kills grew every year.  Mostly mulies and 'lopes but coyotes and a medium sized black bear were taken as the years passed.  Core-lockt bullets are deadly!

We tried many ammo brands in the early 1970's.  We found that Winchester Power Point produced the biggest holes.

Lately, I've enjoyed much target shooting with low cost PMP ammo from South Africa that sold for $9.00 per box a few years ago.

In my opinion, the BEST bullets for long distance accuracy include Sierra ProHunter, Hornady SST and Nosler Ballistic Tip.

Good hunting to you.

I just pick up some core-locks 100 gr for the Remington 243 cal. I was out shooting the other day seem the gun will print one hole group with 34 grains of IMR 4064 @ 2.700.The Mohawk has a 18 1/2" barrel wonder if it is enough to get the job done on eastern deer.I see more FPS around 2900
with the Remington's factory bullets:I would say my load around 2700 FPS

My wife killed her elk last year with a .243 using 95 gr nosler ballistic tips shooting just under 2800fps one shot and done at 185 yrds.  My buddies mom killed a moose a few years ago with a .243 one shot and done.  Now would I recommend going after elk and moose with a .243 probably not but it will definitely get the job done so I wouldn't worry the .243 is capable enough.
