Very nice line-up...you should have stuck a 9.3x62 next to the 35 Whelen to see the 0.008" difference in bullet size... ;D... and a 9.5x62/375-06 together to show the ??? difference between them... ;D ::) 8)  Hahahahahaha  Talk about splitting hairs.

They're all good cartridges.

Any of these cases could be used to shake out the 38-55 Win...just use .377-.378 size bullets.  Good way to get back those lost feet per second after doing a Bobbit on that long 38-55 barrel.  :(

Is there a generic 358x405 similar to the ___x444 (J_D_J) situation? 

I inquired about the 358 GNR and the creator declined rechambering, saying the welded on lug makes the barrel too hard and eats reamers. 

What about the obsolete 35WCF with the rim cut thicker to allow reformed Hornady 405 brass?  I don't think either would clean out a whelen chamber, though, throwing it back to the 35Rem donor.  The 35Rem donor does allow a 356WIN.

What??? Sounds like an excuse to me!  ::) I had a 38-55 bored and rechambered to 405 Win, several others done, 357Max to 35 Remington, 280 Improved, 35 Whelen Improved.  I've also done several rechambers by hand with no problems, 357Mag to Max, 30-30 Ackley, 270 Ackley, 45 Colt to 460S&W.

My 357Maxi reamer has done over 40 rechambers and is still working great!

Hornady and Ruger have collaborated on several big, old, rimmed cartridges for the #1 Rifle.  So there seems to be a lot more formerly obsolete donor brass available of all kinds.

Imagine what you could do with this, haha.

I just discussed having a 450-400 3" done with Wayne yesterday, he's got a buggered 26" 338-06 barrel that needs reboring to something .358" or bigger, still thinking on it, maybe a 35 Brown-Whelen, he's gone hunting until early November, so got lots of time to think!  ;D

There are a lot of old/odd/obsolete cases advertised..........but in the past 18mo. every one Ive inquired about has been back ordered with no definate date of arrival. Admittedly Ive not asked about 'many', but I advise that if you are interested in a cartridge to inquire about availability before committing to a rechamber.

I don't really need it, I don't hunt elk regularly, and where I do hunt it's usually cows only, I've only got one 5 point bull in all the years I've hunted there, a couple spikes and the rest cows, I already have a 35 Whelen Improved Handi that pushes 250gr Hornady RN 2650fps, and 200gr TSX ~2900fps, but the shorter neck on the B-W sure looks like a better improved version. I shied away from it when I considered the Improved due to die costs, but CH4D will make them for $78.

When I get around to it, I'm going to do a .35 on .405 Winchester brass.  I'll use .35 Win dies held .250 short.  But first I'm going to do a full length .375 Win case necked down with .357 Herrett dies.  Should be good for 2100fps with a 220 grain bullet from a rechambered .357 Magnum.

Only1 that sound like a great idea.  I have used that same technique of holding a die short & it works quit well. (keeps die cost down)  ;D   Please keep us posted.

The 9.3X74R might be a good case. Necking it from .366 to .357 shouldn't be as much of a jump as the .450-400 case which is a .40 cal. Hmmm now that Ruger has chambered the #1 for that ctg brass should be available. Just a thought.

The 30R Blaser necked up would work, I think, as would the .375 Flanged.

Before you jump, check out the prices and availability of the brass you want to use...there are many American and Metric cases that will work and sound great but when you start looking for them, they'er either not made anymore or cost $6-10 bucks apiece... ::) :( >:(...the 405 Win won't be a problem and it is a very good one to use plus it has been run up the road several times for several calibers.

Also check on the price of dies unless you plan on going roundy-roundy with several you already have...I still do it until the "real" dies get home.

Check out Buffalo Arms, Quality Cartridge, Graf's for brass and CH4D for dies.

.375 Flanged is available right now for $2.70-2.80 a pop.  If you put a semi custom dies set, expensive brass and reamer up against the cost of stubbing or reboring for a more common cartridge, it's brass and dies, you come up with pretty similar total project cost.

A .405 based cartridge will not totally clean up a 35 Whelen chamber.  If it that is the goal, I personally would use full length belted magnum brass as a starting point to be economical.  Of course that wouldn't be rimmed, strictly speaking. The only other rimmed case is might be .45-100-2.6"  or one of the other big .45 BP cases.  They are too thin for this application for my taste.
