i am still shooting powder i bought 15 yrs ago bulk for $3.00 a pound,  My caps were purchased by the thousand when my buddy opened his store.  $5.00 a thousand.  (I bought ten rolls)   the bullets are wadcutters that I mold myself.  Even a 22 RF doesn't get cheaper than that.  i shoot just slightly over 30 grains of fffg.  i figure it costs me about 2 cents.

I was in the local gunshop Saturday. Primers were 5.99 + tax. Black powder is non existant and Pyrodex is $26.50 at Wally World. Last scrap lead I bought was 57 cents a pound. It's about the same cost as my centerfire handloads. Black powder shooting used to be cheap.  :o Not now.

One can reload centerfire cartridges to produce comparable ballistics for considerably less than the cost of feeding a muzzleloader. Centerfire primers are about half the cost of percussion caps. Black and smokeless powders are similar in price per pound but you'll use 5 times as much powder per shot. Lead is a wash since a given amount of lead can be cast into balls or bullets. I did calculations like this 40+ years ago and it was as true then as now. You never could shoot a muzzleloader for "less than the cost of .22's" unless you got almost everything free, percussion caps alone cost more than .22 LR's.

I was in the wrong Wal Mart the other day. I was in a different one in another town today and walked by the black powder section. Pyrodex was only $19.97. Of course the higher priced store is my local store.

I always shop Wally World for B/p stuff just after B/p season, their stuff; powder, caps, and assorted sabots are usually around 40% off.

For me, the savings over rimfire & centerfire shooting is number of shots fired. When out plinking or target shooting with cartriges, I can easily burn through several hundred rounds. With BP, I'll generally shoot a lot less due to the time it takes to load.

Must be nice to have a Wally World that stocks BP supplies let alone any other reloading stuff. Around my area you are able to buy some shotgun ammo and a poor selection of CF stuff.
