Scout mount / open reflex sight on Mosin Nagant M91/30
« on: September 26, 2010, 04:01:52 PM »
I have read that there is actually a dovetail, similar in size to what you find on a .22 rifle on a Mosin. At the gun show today,I saw this:

It was 10 dollars. Similar ones can be found for 10-20 dollars on a Google search. Mine was not in a box so I have no part number, but this link calls it a .22 Picatinny/Weaver adapter.

http://www.opticsdome.com/leapers-low-profile-airgun-22-to-picatinny-weaver-rail-adaptor.html?___store=default I dont recommend or not recommend this link,I have never done business with these people,I bought mine at a gun show. They list it for 7 dollars however, which seems like a pretty good price, but maybe you can find an even better price somewhere else. At least it has a description and part number.

The wheels started turning. A half hour later at a table,I saw an open reflex sight for 40 dollars. It was genericly packaged and called a "Tactical 4 Reticle Sight". I saw them at other tables sold under half a dozen brands and names, with prices ranging from 40 dollars to 100 dollars. They all appear to be the exact same sight. There apperantly are two models, one with  a switch to go from red to green, the other just red. Mine has the switch. There are also slightly smaller ones, perhaps even smaller than a Fast Fire II and some that only have a dot reticle. This was cheapest they had there though, and of the others that were as cheap it seemed to be the one that worked the best for me. I dont know if it will break after a few shots or not,but my theory is,it will work long enough to see if the entire idea of a reflex sight on the Mosin is a good idea. If it breaks after a few clips of ammo, and it does not work,Ill try a long eye relief scope. If it breaks but works well before it does,Ill get something like a fast fire. Either way,I'm only out 40 dollars.

So,how to put it all together. First, I went here  http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinDisassembly.htm
I removed the two barrel bands (actually, they would not clear the front sight, but that's OK,they didn't have to) and removed the hand guard. I then followed the directions for removing the rear sight by drifting out the two pins and then drifting it forward off the dovetail. Mine was as sharp as a knife. Be careful if your doing this to yours. No one bothered to deburr a part that would be covered by the rear sight I guess. (Just get those rifles out into the hands of soldiers to kill more Nazis!)

Now I just mounted up the Picatinny adapater.

And then installed the sight.

This thing is on there solid. I am not worried in the least that this mount will vibrate loose while firing. Best of all,it was only 10 dollars, but I would not want one of the ones that replace the rear sight blade even if someone gave me one of the 50 dollar ones for free. This thing isn't going anywhere.

Have you shot it yet with that set up?  I put one of those stupid ones that replace the rear sight and it shot loose before I could even get it on paper.  I am very interested if this holds up better.  Keep us updated.

Yes and it worked great, but I went one better. B-Square makes a low profile mount (it actually is a pair of them) that is made to do the same thing. You can get a generic version them from ebay too,and they appear to be the exact same product as the Bsquare ones. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=360568 These work even better as they are lower so the sight does not sit so high. I shot it with the original adapter and it was rock solid. I then bought some of these off ebay for 10 bucks a pair, put those on,and put a NC Star 3-7x LER scope on it and shot another hundred rounds and again it was rock stable. I also found a gem at a pawn shop. Its a weaver model T10 mount for the same sort of thing, going from a 22 dovetail to a weaver rail. Its a little longer than I need but I can cut it down, and its similarly low profile like the Bsquare ones. I think it was discontinued a very long time ago though as I cant find any mention of the weaver one on google.

My recommendation would be the BSquare style mounts. They are cheap and rock solid. Honestly I dont know why anyone even bothered to design the rear sight mounts when it has a dovetail on it. Just drift it on with a punch and tighten the two screws down and its not going anywhere.

That is awesome.  I wish I saw that before I spent the money on that dang rear sight replacement.  I cant wait to try it out.

That looks good. I have been thinking of converting one of my carbines to a scout rifle. Looks like I may go that way. Thanks for the review.

From what I can tell form 7.62x54r.net the original M91 sight base is soldered on, the M38 sight base is a pinned sleeve, and the Fin M28/30 sight base is a sleeve with a retaining screw.  And the M44, M91/59, and M 91/38 all have the same sight base as the M38.  And all the Finnish are like the M91 or the M28/30.  So those dont have the dovetail.  The M91/30 is the only one I could see that has it for sure.

A pinned sleeve that is not soldered would be fine. You can chuck up a piece of bar stock on the lathe, and bore it to the right dimensions, then clamp it to the compound with a dovetail cutter in a collet in the head stock and cut your dove tail.

Thats way beyond my abilities.  I can remove and replace and thats about my limit.  Maybe I should give machining another try.

Could you provide the link for the low profile mounts on E-Bay?  I can't see the picture if this is just .22 scope rings clamped to the dove tail or if there is both a mount and rings...
Thanx

I would use one of my 91/59 carbines. It has the same base as a 91/30. I guess I'll have to get my carbines out of the boxes and go through them.

Its an adapter that's made to go on a 22 dovetail to turn it into a weaver mount. I have weaver rings clamped to that. The low profile adapaters are a tight fit. You have to use a mallet and a dowel to get them on. Once they are tightened down, they are going nowhere.  These are the ones that I bought http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370433451320&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT If you look throuhg his auctions, hes selling them by the single for 7.99 or by the pair for 9.99. I bought 3 sets myself becuase they just look like something I would like to have some spares around of. One thing that has recently come to mind is whether you might be able to make or get a mount that will cantilever over the receiver and support a normal rifle scope,by clamping it to that dovetail.

As far as I know, only the 91/30's and 91/59's have the dovetail. So if it has to be a carbine, get a 91/59.

Well, since a 91/59 was just a cut down 91/30, ?????

I may be totally missing something here but why couldn't you just use .22 scope rings and skip the adaptor?
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

I am thinking a .22 mount was designed for the recoil of a .22, not a 7.62X54R. I'm scared the .22 mount cannot take it for that long, and you may have to constantly rezero the scope. I use scout scope mounts with pistol long eye relief scopes.
