clearing traps

can anyone help me with a few ideas with removing different furbearers from legholds without damaging the furs.  :roll:

I assume you are talkling about dispatching the animal?

If so I do it two ways. On coons, possums, fox, and a live rat or mink I hit them across the snout with an axe handle that I pack with me. On coyotes and animals that I can't hit across the snout for some reason I shoot behind the ear with a .22 rifle.

If at all possible use drowning rigs on your foothold water sets. Always use drowning rigs for mink, muskrat, and beaver. These animals will twist out of a trap if not killed quickly.

For skunks, I shoot them through the lungs with a .22 short. Then I walk off, run the rest of my line, and come back to get him. He should be dead and most of the time will not spray.

Well, that is my 2 cents worth. Hope it helps some.

Thanks Zack, We would have got to that but had to do some fun'n.Some things you just cant pass up.
  Hope you did'nt take the fun'n with you wrong TrapperZ. Glad to have some younger trappers around. Are you going to the Pa. Convention in Erie this June ? You can meet some of us there.

thanks KY,  i know it was kind of an uneducated question, but thats why i joined. So i can learn more from experienced trappers like yourself. i am a beginner and i know noone that traps. so, thanks again.

TrapperZ: Any question you have ask it. If at all possible I will help out. This is only my 2nd year of trapping, but I know a little bit. If you want to become a good trapper read all the material you can read, watch any video you can get your hands on, and visit these forums and ask questions. I'm sure someone will help you out.

Z   ask away we all started  knowing nothing and no question is stupid.  We are here to help and if one of us doesnt know the answer  the other probably will....  Sometimes we forget things we take for granted so  dont be afraid to ask.  We hope to guide you in the right way so you do things right and humanely....
