12 ga BP loads?
« on: September 27, 2010, 04:25:02 PM »
I'm sure this must have been covered before but my search didn't turn up anything useful.
I just received a (New to me) 12 ga push plug barrel from Sourdoughjoe. What is a good starting load using loose BP and 3/4 or 1 oz of shot?
Thanks,66

shotgun loads are done volumetrically.  Simply put you use the same amount of powder as shot.  In other words,  if you use 80 grains of powder, fill the same measure with shot.  For my new englander that was 80 grains of ffg goex and approximately one ounce of shot.

The manual list this as a light load.
Cap --- #11
Powder --- 75grains FFG -- light load
Shot --- 1 1/8oz -- light load
Round Ball --- .715 dia. Pure Lead

After pouring powder down the bbl start a over-powder wad and making sure it does not tip, push it down the bore seating it squarley on the powder. Do not pound the wad on the powder as only slight pressure is needed. Next start the cushion wad following the same procedure. Pour in the desired shot charge. The over-shot wad is now started in the bore. Make sure the wad is tight in the bore and seat it solidly on the shot. Remove the ramrod and proceed the same as firing a round ball.

If you can find a copy of Lyman Black Powder handbook copy right 1975 it has a ton of information on loading for the 12ga and how to fine tune differant loads for differant applications. Plus it was printed when these guns were in there hay-day. Kurt

Thanks for the info.I have a little fitting to get the barrel snug on the rec. face, but I should be making smoke soon.
Any problem with using plastic cushion wads?
About 40 years ago we used toilet paper for wadding. Sometimes you had to step on the burning tissue. G66
