CVA Optima 209 Magnum
« on: September 28, 2010, 07:38:05 AM »
Guys

Got all the order stuff finished with Cabelas this morning. I got a new CVA Optima 209 Mag in Black/SS on the way with 20 Shockwaves (250 grain) and all the other starter stuff. Hope to go buy powder at the end of next week. The gun is supposed to be here next Wed. so I will try to go get powder on Friday. It is to expensive to have it shipped when I can run about 50 miles and get it. (good excuse to go to sproting goods store anyway) I won't spend near about $25 in gas to run down there and pick it up ($25 is what the shipping haz mat charges were).

I am stoked. Never ML hunted or even loaded one before. I am going to order some TC Cheap Shots one day and try those, but I wanted to try the Shockwaves first. I found a little store I can get them at for about $3 more than Cheap Shots.

I plan on buying 777 or Pyrodex pellets. I may buy powder form instead due to cost, but I will also have to buy the powder measure and a flask. Probably just stick with pellets.

Awesome rifle!  I love mine, especially with 100gr blackhorn209, .500" 300gr Thor conical!

For scope rings, check out the Dura Sight Dead On mount. Its a one piece mount system and only runs $35

Do yourself a favor and buy loose powder, an adjustable measure, and a funnel top for the powder canister.  You won't need a flask, but will eventually want some speed loaders for hunting.

There are several styles and makers of funnel tops, but they all look pretty much like this.

Also

Do any of you know if the Truglo ghost sights will fit this rifle? I know the rear will, but will the front sight?

They should.  I have a set of their Ghostring/Globe style on my Buckstalker and they come with several adapters and screw sizes for different threads and even wedges for dovetail slots.  8)

How do you guys like the Truglo Ghost Rings? I am thinking I could see them easier than the regular fiber optic rifle sights.

oh i love it. Once you get used to the big sight picture you will hate the old sights.

Big clear view of your target, a clean post with a green dot is perfect for 6 o'clock hold.  Aiming at game is crystal clear, i think that when i shoulder the rifle, the sights are almost lined up and ready to go.

The front globe sight is awesome because you can either increase or decrease the amount of light the front fiber optic gathers. Perfect in the field especially when you are on the flat lands working your way up into dark timber. Being able to control the glare is big time nice.

Thanks bigblock.

I also want to thank you for getting me on board with CVA. I will be buying some of the ghost sights ASAP. Maybe I will get a hold of some before deer season.

Tacklebury

I like the Buckstalker. I almost bought one of those, but really wanted SS barrel. How do you like the sights?

Love 'em.  They come on target quickly and have proven very accurate.  I am looking at a set of the std. TruGlo with the TFO (tritium fiber optic) for my Hawken also.  The only thing I don't like is being careful not to get the front sight caught on stuff when walking.  Once I looked down and I'd managed to pick up some kinda stick with leaf on it stuck inside the sight.  Not good if you need to make a snap shot.  lol  Every thing else about them is good.  I threw the sunshade in my shooting bag, but never use it.  They glow well in gloom too.  8)

Just checked UPS.com and the Optima will be here tomorrow. Not bad since I just ordered it the 28th. It was estimated originally to be here the 6th, so I am impressed with Cabelas turn-around.

I will take pictures ASAP and post them.

Just a couple thoughts for you to take or leave:

1.) clean the gun thoroughly before shooting the first time (dawn dish soap and HOT water)
2.) oil the outside of the barrel/rustables after cleaning
3.) fire off a cap only before shooting a load at the range to purge any oil products that might have seeped into action or that are in the bottom of the breech
4.) plan long bench sessions.  (I shot for about 2 hours last night and got 6 shots on target...)
5.) pull your breechplug and clean the barrel well each shot (only for bench shooting for groups/zeroing) [I've tried without doing this and groups always suffer in my experience]
6.) make sure you clean the gun as soon as possible after shooting (dawn dish soap and HOT water is my solution)
7.) clean off the cup of the breechplug and make sure once done that there is nothing obstructing the flash hole
8.) Once you've cleaned the gun, put it near a heat source for an hour to remove water if one is available
9.) Use bore butter on patch and put a good coat on rifling (some will disagree, but keeps mine like new)
[You can use oil when storing, but if you do be sure it's all cleaned out before loading]
10.) oil exterior once all dryed up

Have fun with it, just don't be in too much of a hurry.  ;)  Most of these are in the user's manual also, but figured I'd let you know ahead of time.

One final thought; create a process/mental check list and do everything step by step the first few times.  It's easy to dry-ball (forget powder) if you are going fast.  It can be a bit of a pain, although not as bad with an inline vs. a traditional.  Some people have double charged too from too much speed.  Once you have the sequence down, it won't be as critical.  ;)

Thanks tacklebury! I appreciate the heads up. I had not planned on using bore butter, planned on just using oil for storage and then Windex and dry patch before loading after being stored.

No hurry here. I emailed Thor about there sample pack and will order some of there bullets once I get the size I need. I will also be shooting loose Pyrodex RS and trying 80, 90, 100 and 110 grains by volume. I have the Shockwaves also and will try the same powder sequence. I bought Winchester W209 primers today.

I will be taking a full Saturday starting around 7:00 AM to get used to the gun and work up a load. I have a lead sled so that will remove the human error some. I am going to shoot at 50 yards and set my sights 1" high at that yardage. I am thinking it will be a couple of weeks before I get to shoot like I want to.

Oh, I will also have a fellow hunter who has been shooting ML's since the early 70's there to help me along and we will also be shooting his Omega and Renegade.

Great, that'll be nice to have some support with knowledge.  ;)  When I got my first and started, it took me 30 min. reading a book to get everything going.  I checked off all the steps literally in the book the first few times.  Having information is much easier and nicer with the internet these days.  ;)
