What's your Turkey Gun?
« on: September 28, 2010, 08:46:09 PM »
Mine is usually my Beretta Xtrema II. This last spring I used my Benjamin-Sheridan .20 Cal pellet gun. Though these both work just fine I was thinking about making a dedicated turkey gun. H&r/Nef Pardner 12 or 20(haven't decided) full choke with camo stock and a tru-glo red dot that i have layin around. what is your gun in the turkey woods?

Spring archery Bowtech Allegiance

Spring shotgun 3 1/2" 870 (I've never liked this gun)

Fall turkey 2 3/4" Model 12 with 28" modified and simmons rib

Loaner gun when I'm guiding Benelli SBE II

The wife uses the the SBE II as well

I've also killed turkeys with a 3" Model 12 with a 30" full choke barrel and simmons rib, and my BPS 10ga but I don't have any pictures of those :(

This past fall used my Winchester 1400 MKII with Rem. Express #4
I didn't see any birds for the first 2 weeks of the season. Then under less then ideal conditions (very windy) was able to take this bird between two ridges in the State Forrest I normally hunt

When I use a shotgun, there are three favorites: 870 3" field 12ga., model 12 heavy duck 12 ga. 3", and a BPS 10 ga...these are my three favorites...which one I select depends on where I am hunting..this spring I plan to use the 10 ga. here in Wy.

Older H&R Topper 88 16 gauge MOD choke. Took this turkey this past fall with 1 oz. #6 shot Remington Game Loads at 27 yards:

Mossberg 835. Bought new when they first came out with the camo version in about 1990. Never had a problem and has taken MANY turkeys in 5 different states.

I'm still abuildin' mine.  H&R single barrel, but it's still not decided if I will use the Topper 32" full choke, or the 28" mod.  Either way, I should have it ready by spring! ;D

I hope to find me a smith who can tap  the barrel for screw in chokes, if so the 28" mod. will become a 22" full......

Hello to all Turkey Hunters; I'am 62 and think I've missed maybe 2 or 3 years of the Missouri seasons. I've tried it with a single barrel winchester 12, 2 different remington 870's, 1 browning 10 ga. pump. I think you fit the gun to the person and style of hunting he likes. I hunted before the days of screw in chokes and don't want to go back to that. Don't like shotguns that don't shoot straight (browning 10 ga.),too heavy and if the bird is to close say 10 to 15 yds., its just to much gun. Iam a woods hunter, a walker, sometimes, but always awake. Been doing this a long time and taught my son's and grandson how to do it. Keep it simple and you won't be sorry! Last year after I emptyed the remington 12 ga. pump 3 incher, the turkey turned and ran right up to me and I kicked him with my number 10 boot. He weighed 23 pounds with a 10 inch beard. I've done it all and seen it all. Hunting skills kill more turkeys than what a gun ever will. Thanks for listening and hope you all kill a bigun this spring. Just don't kill mine and stay out of my huntin spot!     Jenkst

personally I would stay with #4 or #5 in 3in shells, and find the brand that shoots best in your gun.

I always figgered what's the use of having 3.5 inch chambers if ya ain'ta goin to use them!   ;D  I use #5's simply because the pattern should be denser then 4's and individual pellets have more energy then 6's.  Of course when I got my current weapon I patterned it with 3 & 3.5 inch shells and different size shot just to be sure!

But I tell ya!  even shooting just 3, 12 ga. 3.5 inch shells off a bench ain't real fun!   ;D

I'm a pretty big guy and can take a little recoil, but I can say that even I don't really like the idea of the recoil from a 3.5in shell,  but I know several people that shoot them, I just say have fun:)

Doubt I will use the 3 1/2 inchers.  That rossi ways next to nothing. I dont even get through a box of 2 3/4 shells in one range session.  But its cheap and ya gotta use what ya got. Thanks for the advice on shells.

Me too,
It is Dad's but it is easier to borrow it from him than drag something across the country.
Dad so far has been uing my Stepmonster's Benelli.
Both of us use 3" Heavy shot #4 loads.
I was really impressed with them.

MC,

I have been wanting to try the Heavy Shot but have not taken the time to pattern it. Up until now, I have used 3.5" Federals and have never had a problem. 3.5" Remingtons on the other hand seem to be problematic. I have had a few FTE's with them and my brother, who has a newer 835, has had problems with them also. The FTE's that I have had, appear to have a swollen brass around the bottom after firing. Never had this with any other brand of ammo. Not sure why, but almost all Remington ammo I have purchased has caused me problems. I kind of shy away from it now.

I shoot a 12ga H&R topper with a 4 power Simmons Pro Diamond scope. I use 3 inch , 2oz of number 5 shot. My barrel has been tapped and has a scope mount on it . I use a Tru glo choke tube. It does really well,  lite and easy to carry, but does kick a little .

Ben.
