45-70 BC vs 45-70 Handi { Hunting}
« on: September 29, 2010, 04:03:35 AM »
What are the general opinions on hunting with these two rifles.  I have been using the 22" Handi for some time now and find it, well, HANDI ;D.  Recently I aquired a BC 45-70.  Although fun to shoot off the bench, its seems that in a tree or a shoot house, its gonna be awkward.
As far as accuracy, both are great.  What about velocity?  Is the BC gonna generate higher velovity because of the longer barrel??
Is there any real advantage of the BC over the Handi or vice versa??
Most shots here are well within 150yds.
Any and all opinions welcome!
Thanks
Jeff

I think you have answered most all of your own questions.
As far as veloscity goes, yes, the longer barrel will give you more, but within the distances you stated, it will do nothing for you that the 22" barrel can't do.
I have both and while I love the look and charater of the BC, I use the Handi most of the time.

The velocity gain is very little.  The BC is too long and heavy for much of anything IMO.

I have had both.  I cut the 22 in. barrel to 18 in.  The BC barrel went down the road.  Shorter is much handi-er.  Now if I had Bison in my back yard, the picture would be different.  Seriously, nothing you ever shoot would know the difference between the two.  Just go with what works for your situation.  I personally didn't want to deal with the long barrel in hunting situations.  The shorty has ruined me, now any gun over 3 feet 3 inches long seems awkward.

Where you'll find the 32" BC barrel very un-handi is in the thickets.  It's amazing how many more vines and bushes snag on that extra 10" of barrel.

I don't own a .45-70 BC, but i can tell ya I'm thinking of pruning my 22 incher down to about 18.  I'm right now putting together an 18 inch .38-55 and I like it.  I doubt being minus 4 inches of barrel is going to make a significant difference.  It will in weight and handling.  Were I a bench rest shooter, I'd have the .45-70 BC, but I'm not and I don't want to lug that around the woods.

I used the BC for CAS competitions many years ago.   It was very accurate, so I took it hunting.......one time.    the barrel was so long it just got in the way.    Nowadays only my standard 22" 45/70 goes hunting with me.

You can tell you guys don't do any traditional BP hunting!  32 inches indeed!   ::)
The barrel on my BP hunting rifle is 44 inches long! ;D
I find the barrel on my BC downright fast handling!  ;) ;D

I've hunted with several 46" barreled flintlocks but they were much lighter than the BC.  Nothing is gained with the long barrel.

I still have my long barrelled smoke pole for the extra challenge during turkey season, but it jes gits too durn in the way when I am in the swamp thickets looking for piggies. Got a short barrel smoke pole (26") for that during BP season.  I'll be headed to South Jawja this weekend Richard.    How bout you?  :o

I hunted with a 34" barreled Lancaster flintlock for several years, it didn't seem to be too bad, but it didn't weigh as much as the BC either, but then again, I was a lot younger then and now prefer short and light!  ;D

The pic was an afterthought, the deer was skinned up on the mountain and I didn't have my camera with me, got it back to camp and Dad was headed to town for the night, next day he brought the head back after the butcher removed it, it has to remain on the carcus during transport, hence the better late than never pic.  ;D

I've taken my BC out after deer, feral hogs, and bear. I don't find the length too bad to deal with since I hold it vertical in my right hand. The weight hasn't bothered me either, but I'm six two, 240 pounds and can still deadlift over 500 lbs. I guess I could see where it might bother some folks...

You guys must hunt with some light guns if you find the BC too heavy!  The length might be an issue in the woods, but I think it's not a heavy gun at all.

I know, may I burn in Hades forever, but I bought a BC barrel and I am going to cut it down...Well I wanted a 24 or 26 inch handi barrel in 45-70 and you can't order one as far as I can tell, so...I already have a Marlin guide gun, so I don't need another shorty.  Wanted to see what the longer barrel will do (plus I can load hotter than for the Marlin, if I want to).  I really don't have any interest in a BC for a BC's sake.  I would think this would be a manageable size to carry in the woods.

Hey Gregg!

Went last weekend and did my neighborhood improvement around my stands.  Doesn't look like I'll get back before opening day.   :(  Sure hope it's cooler for you then it was for me!   :D

I killed a deer last year with my 38-55 TC and before that one with my BC when it was still a 45-70.  Both from the same stand.  Never noticed the weight sitting up in a tree!   ;D

To tell the whole story, I've thought of taking the 45-120 BC's barrel back to 28 inches but then I might want to do some BPCR shooting one day...  :-\  'sides, my 45-70 with carbine wood is about as Handi a hunting rifle as one could want!   ;)

Stop it or I'll have to put my 45-120, 32" BC in the witness protection program.  The hacksaw blades are only 2' away from that long barrelled critter.  If I make it a shorty I will start a grass fire at the club. :P

I almost never post on this forum, but every so often something captures my interest enough to force a reply.
I think that your style and type of hunting really dictate which barrel length is the better option.  I ground hunt, walk through swamp after swamp, and love my BC.   The barrel length is no problem even in S. MS's jungle, the weight is a lot less than some bolt guns I've owned, and the pointability and accuracy are outstanding for a $400 dollar rifle.  Honestly, it's the most accurate gun I've ever shot for the time and money put into it.
If your a box hunter, it may not be for you.  If your a tree hugger, it may not be for you.  If your a ground hunter, it will work for you.
One poster mentioned his size, great point.  Size will help or hinder the gun, but I'm 5'10" and 220 lbs., I have 0% problems carrying or maneuvering the rifle in the woods.  It's a personal thing in reality, I like the nostalgia and challenge of an old caliber with open sights.  Some folks choose a different approach, and that's cool.
Me I stick with what I have, it works all day for me.  You may want to try both barrels and see what's your preference.  (Then sell me the one you don't like, my son is dying for me to get him a "Buffalo Gun" this year ;) ;D).
  Good Luck this year!

Well, I carried the .45-70 BC during early antlerless season here and blooded it.  It does get a tad heavy after walking about 2-3 miles for me.  I ended up doing the shoulder rest off and on and kept swapping position, but because it's nose heavy, it gets a little tiring.  I've decided, if I'm going to shoot one from the house it'll be the BC, but if I'm stalking, like normal, I'm using my .45 Colt BC.  ;)  I'm carrying my .45 Colt New Model Blackhawk in crossdraw fashion and hoping to get one with that if the opportunity knocks also.  Give er a try though, it's real nice to have confidence in the accuracy I get from it over 100 yards, but up to 100 the colt is sufficient.  I was considering making me a loop carry strap to give the hands a break occasionally if I do take it out again.  Good luck deciding.  8)

I have the 22" Handi because I couldn't find a BC I could afford. I find the 22" accurate enough, but it still looks awfully short to me. I put a rear sight on the very back of thebarrel, where a scope goes for those who use them. My muzzle-loader has a .58 barrel 34" long and 1-1/8" across. Barrel alone weighs more than the Handi. I also have several milsurp in full rifle length, overall rifle of 48" to 52". Guess I just like the old long stuff. Even my SAA revolvers are 7.5"
