H&R 980 Ultra Slug 12ga
« on: September 29, 2010, 08:11:25 PM »
I just traded for this 980 Ultra Slug gun in 12ga 3" I have NEVER had a slug gun. whats good round to use for it I was thinking bout the hornady sst it weighs a ton has anyone shot one whats the kick like? do you think a nikon BDC 3x9x40 scope would hold up to the recoil because I already have one? It will be at least a week before I get to shoot it 8( Whats the effective range I was thinking zero 1 1/2" high at 100 yards be good out to 175 - 200 or is that to far for slug gun? Thanks for any input on this matter

Best advice I ever got regarding rifled slug gun was to buy a bunch of different sabots and shoot them for group to find out what your gun likes before you start sighting in.

I have an H&R Ultra Slug Gun and mine shoots the 2.75" Hornady, Win Partiton Gold, and the 3" Rem Accu Tips all very well (1.5-2" group @ 100yd).  One thing with my gun is it tends to shoot better groups after I have shot 3 or 4 rounds - I guess the "fouling" in the rifling helps.  Even though it is a heavy gun, it still has a good amount of recoil.  2 years ago I put a Nikon Omega scope on mine and I really like the extra eye relief with a gun that has heavy recoil.

I've only killed one deer at over 100 yards with a slug gun and that was using Remington solid coppers and it was a bang flop

2-3/4 in Lightfields are hard to beat in the 980 ultra.Groups did not start to open until the 97 yard mark.

Mine likes the Lightfield Magnum Sabots  in the orange box......

Last season I dropped an 8ptr offhand at 137 paces.......  I thought I should hold high but realised I didn't need to.  Hit where I was aiming, right in the spine, directly above his heart.......   Next time I won't compensate at that distance.......

00 would you take a shot out to 150-175? Where do you get the lightfields Bass Pro or Gander Mountain?

I wouldn't hesitate at 150 after that, I would compensate a little at 175.

I buy mine at rural king, but BP and GM both carry them also.  I've also seen them occasionally at WalMart and Dick's.....

Orange Box...

3" Sabots.....

I'm a believer.

I also shoot the lightfields through mine.  Love em.  Good out to 150 yards.  2" group at 100.  Good luck.
