Rear sight ideas? For a TC Hawken/Renegade.
« on: September 30, 2010, 04:25:59 AM »
Hi,
I'm not too thrilled with the rear sight on my Renegade.

If I could find a scope mount, I'd probably scope it.

But failing that, does anyone have any creative ideas for a nice rear sight that uses the two screw holes. Don't really want to cut a dovetail into it.

I've even fooled around with an XS Site systems rear peep mounted forward up there where the factory rear was installed. Results were so so.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I had my traditional gun drilled and tapped for a WGRS peep, worked great with a Firesight up front, with no aperture, worked like a ghost ring, Williams makes a ghost ring for the WGRS also, and the Twilight aperture works great too. A call to Williams will get you the right combination of sights to work on the TC, they also make a receiver sight for it.

The Lyman 57SML is another option, it mounts on the tang, one addition hole needs to be drilled and tapped.

Just FYI;  the 57sml won't fit on a Renegade without removing some wood from the side of the stock, tried, it will fit the Hawkin but the Ren is wider  ???

Stuart; What is it you don't like about the factory sight? Cause it is a "Target" style sight,, and what are ya kinda looking for??

I removed metal from the sight itself on mine.
You could also try this:

Williams aslo makes a FP Hawken reciever sight that will work on the Renegade.

My friend had the same sight on his Hawken and he was very happy with it.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

With my eyes, it becomes a task of settling a fuzzy front site into a fuzzier notch of a rear site. It also seems to block out everything underneath. :-\

I like the idea of a peep.  The barrel alread has ONE hole right at the breach end.

If a person reads the Lyman instructions I posted, it states exactly that for rifles other than Lyman and the TC Hawken.

Have you checked Track of the Wolf (http://www.trackofthewolf.com/index.aspx?as=1)?  They have "heap plenty" sights of various configurations.  You should be able to find something there.

I used the rear sight from a Remington 788.  You may have to have one hole drilled and taped though.

Didn't TC make a flip up tang sight for it ?

At one time, years ago, T/C did make a short range, and a mid-range, vernier sight for the Hawken.
If you find one today you will likely pay an arm and a leg for it, but many feel they are worth it for the versitility
I have had a couple over the years. (Tim may remember some of the following pictures.)
My prefereence of the two is the short range vernier, which is also cheaper of the two vernier sights.
Killed a lot of Rocks, a few sticks, and numerous Stumps with it. Regular sights was set up for 75yds, the raised vernier was then set at about 175yds.which was really stretching it.

Like many lesser quality vernier sights, it is raised & lowered, then held in the upright position by a very small detent ball, pressed into place by an equally small coil spring, which present a less than 100% stable staff....seems that tightening the base screws would always drift the windage...however, in all fairness, much of this could have been 'operator error'.

In the down position, a heavy charge with heavy recoil can raise the vernier up....not all the way, not far enough to lock in the upright, but somewhere around half-way. Which is not all that bad, just something of a pain keeping your eye on it all the time to make sure it doesn't get bumped, or damaged.

I would say it is an "okay" sight, just not in the category of MVA, Soule, or Pedersoli...still yet, it's great for Rocks and such.

According to the TC web site, they make a tang sight for the rifle.  It is a peep sight and you can also put an apeture sight on the
front if you wish.  You can also mate it with a high vis front sight as well.  I have a hawken .45 and bought the rear tang sight and
can't say enough good things about it.

I have a Lyman Deerstalker 50 cal percussion carbine.  The Thompson Center Peep Sight works perfectly with the existing tang srews, but I am not sure if it would line up with the tang screws on your gun.  I like this sight alot, but I replaced the aperture (the factory hole was way too small for my factory front sight) with a Dixie Gun Works "Hunting Aperture".  This sight aperture is adjustable from a ghost ring opening to a target version and can be purchased threaded for both the TC and Lyman designed peep sights.

I am currently using a Lyman peep sight setup on mine, but I seem to recall at one point in time many years ago having a Contender scope mount and a 3X scope on it. I think the hole spacing for the factory rear sight is the same as for the contender scope mount rail, or else they made a mount that worked on their barrels with the 3X contender scope... darn... too long ago... Dang! ... can't remember how I did it, but I know I did.
