SWEET! Got a Propane Fryer for FREE!
« on: September 30, 2010, 12:02:22 PM »
My "new best friend" and deer hunter ("young legs"), whom I am allowing to hunt my place this bow season GAVE ME a "Bayou Classic" 30 Qt Stainless Steel Turkey Fryer Kit complete with single burner propane grill that was used ONCE, then put away as if NEW.

Woo Hoo!  Came with a thermometer to 550 degrees F too, but too low for lead.  Immediately gave the 30 Qt pot to the Grouch who said, and I quote, "Dinner is going to be late!"

Now all I need is utensils and I am SMELTING SOME INGOTS!!!!!

Now go to the dollar store or a yard sale and get you a nice stainless boiler and you'll be in business!

I've got about 400 pounds of wheel weights I need to melt and pour into ingots myself!  Such a chore!  :-)

Well your timing is good Landowner. Florida is finally starting to cool down a little. In another week or two I'll be smelting and casting again myself.

Funny, I've always had a cast iron mindset when it comes to smelting...  :-\  How would something like a 5 qt. SS kitchen pot work?   ???

free is always good.

find an old discarded 20 lb propane tank. unscrew the valve and discard. fill the tank with water to make sure all of the gas is purged out. cut along the weld line and use the bottom half to smelt wheel weights. the top half can be used as a plinking target if your shooting range allows it.

I think generally people say to use the stainless steel so that new guys wont try to use aluminum pots when they can't find a cast iron pot.

I bought a 10 qt stainless pot at Goodwill for cheap and use it on the turkey fryer with good results. I use long handled garden tools to stir and skim the pot.

Richard the reason you do nor use aluminum it will fail on you when you have it full of liquid lead and trust me when I say it will and you do not want to be any where near it when it lets go I had a aluminum pot let go on me many years ago before we had internet I was lucky that I had went into the house to get a drink when the pot let go I recovered most of the lead lost about 20 lbs of lead and a colman stove never could get it to work after that and made one big mess that why you do not use aluminum pots to melt lead in as the robot said in lost in space WARNING , WARNING , WARNING DANGER WILL ROBINSON   D Crockett

WARNING , WARNING , WARNING DANGER WILL ROBINSON   D Crockett

:D  Well I tell ya Forest, I've thrown enough beer cans in a camp fire to ever try to melt lead in an aluminum pot!   :D
I was even kinda unsure about a SS pot!   ;D
But, since you and others say it's okay then I'll start looking for one.   5 qt. maybe...  :-\  I just talked to a salvage yard today about scrap WW's. Gonna try to pick up a couple of 5 gal buckets full pretty soon.   ;)

The local scrape yard wants 50 cents a pound for WW. Seems kinda high. I am still well stocked thanks to some forward looking friends.

That's the same price they quoted me Cheese.  Kinda what I figured from what I heard.  The guy told me they pay 46 cents a pound which I'm not sure I believe since spot price was about 29 cents a Lb. last I checked.   :-\  Oh well, since I don't have any friends in the tire business ya gotta do what you gotta do...  ;D

AtlLaw, if you do use the stainless steel pot be aware that, unlike the rough cast iron, the ss will easily slide off a burner when they get hot. Be sure your heat source is level, or that you have some kind of barrier to make sure it stays put.

Actually QAJAQ means kayak in Aleut Eskimo. I've always been quite a kayak enthusiast. If you a Google search for "qajaq59 kayak" you'll find plenty of info about them.

As soon as I get through the flea market this morning, looking for utensils for skimming dross, I will be hooking up the fryer, heating up the pot, and melting some lead and WW's for ingots.

First Timer here going for the Gold!  or maybe that should be the Silver! (color of lead and all...)

I use a small garden shovel with a 5 foot handle for skimming. The hot metal clips that are removed go into a metal pail. I bring these to the recycle center and get about 8 bucks a pail. A large soup ladle is used to pour the lead into the ingot mold. After the ingots are cool I label them with a marker, WW for wheel weight and P for pure. Works for me.
