sight diminsion question?
« on: September 30, 2010, 08:22:21 PM »
While scanning the internet for a front sight for Stevens 64 autoloader noticed everyone is out, savage too, the front sight broke off about 1/4 above the dovetail, don't know how, flea market gun for 50.00. my question is
(1)will any 3/8 dovetail sight work on this rifle.
(2) i have found 1 other rifle is this model sight measures almost 3/4 of inch from top of base to top of sight (.71)
(3) most sights list a base height and sight height, what would the depth of the dove tail be.
finally any ideas on any sight that would work as a replacement

The front sight davetail should be the long standard 3/8", so any replacement sight will fit - but only the correct height will zero, as you surmised.

It's best to calculate the front sight height needed - first by placing the rear sight in the middle of it's elevation adj range (for measuring height only).

First find the rear sight notch height above the bore C/L - measure the bbl OD at the sight blade & divide by 2.  Add that figure (in inches) to the sight notch's height above the bbl's top surface.

You now know approx how high above the bore C/L the top of the new front sight blade needs to be, aka rear sight height. Call this rear measurement "A"

NOW - Measure the bbl OD at the FRONT sight dovetail, and divide by 2 (again).
From that figure, SUBTRACT the depth of the front sight female bbl dovetail from the top of the bbl there to the floor of the dovetail. Call this front measurement "B".

Subtract "B" from "A"  (A minus B), and you will have the height front sight blade you need to buy.
