Its hunting season ????????
« on: October 01, 2010, 03:22:27 AM »
Which military surplus rifle are you hitting the field/woods with this year???

I'm thinking of using the yugo m98k 8mm mauser with the 196gr soft points or the mosin m39 with the 203gr barnaul ammo.

Mosin Nagant. M-39,M-38, or 91/59. Shooting winnie white box metric,(S&B) 180 gr SP. If I get real lucky, it will be one of the bucks around the house here. We'll see.

I picked up an M1A this summer, mainly for range use, but its so darned accurate and fun to shoot, I may use it to tag something in PA this year.  My old 35 Whelen, a re-bored 1909 Argentine Mauser, has accounted for quite a few deer over the years.

If I'm not packing my Contender pistol in 7-30 Waters, I would take my sporterized Krag:

Although I like the peep sight on it, my confidence range is not much further than it is with my scoped Contender.  So if I take it, it will be just for the pleasure of having hunted with a 110 year old firearm sporterized in 1966.

Once I've hunted the Krag, I just might take one of these:

Contender in 17 Rem, 22lr, 22k Hornet, 223 Rem, 256 WM, 6TCU, 7TCU, 7-30, 30 Herrett, 300 Whisper, 30-30 AI, 357 mag, 357 Herrett, 375 JDJ, 44 mag, 45/410..... so far.

My Springfield 1873 Trapdoor 45-70. I'm really looking forward to taking a deer with it.  She shoots pretty good. It gives me about 4" at a 100 yds. Fun to carry and shoot.

I have already used my Swedish (Husquarvarna made) 98 Mauser in 8mm for a Boar hunt and I love the way it puts them down - right then and there, period.  I will continue to use this rifle this year/season.  This is the year of the 8.............. last year it was the 6.5.  Next year - who knows................ Good Luck to all this hunting season.

I'm using a Russian Capture K98k for deer and hogs.

It shoots 196 gr. S&B soft points pretty well but I'm going to try some 196 gr. Privi Partisan soft points and use the most accurate load.

If I get access to a place I can shoot longer ranges, I'll be using my 1911 Schmidt Rubin with Hornady 165gr. Interlocks.  Smokin!  ;)

The 1917 Eddystone I've mentioned prints so nicely with my Hornady 180 gr. RN hand loads, I'm seriously considering wrestling with it in my tent blind.  It's that 26" barrel that's the challenge.  That, and losing key hunting time offered by optics.  Still, my "new" 1917 reminds me of the first centerfire rifle-actually the only "hunting" rifle-my dad ever had.  I can still remember his excitement when he sporterized his rifle (which was also like new).  I'm sorta tempted to fill a tag with the Eddystone for nostalgia purposes.  Sure wish he was around to help.

My P-13 Enfield(Remington manufacture), in 303 Brit.   150 grain handloads.   Its for shootin from a stand,   too heavy to lug around the hills all day.

I normally try to get some meat in the freezer before I
get into the surplus rifle rack. I have been very lucky so far.
I got a button buck last week with my Muzzleloader
and a LARGE doe monday evening so time for the golden
oldies to hunt. Spanish 1893 7mm mauser will be first.

Just loaded up a fresh batch of Hornady 180 gr. RNs pushed by a modest dose of IMR 4831 for the Eddystone.  It's about 3 weeks to Michigan's gun deer season. ;D

My go-to rifle this year will be my 1923 Spanish Mauser shown below in its spray-paint glory.  This ol' war hoss is a MOA shooter.  It now sports a Leupold 2.5x28 IER scope, which cost me about 6X what the rifle cost me.  If rain is forecast, I'll take my M44 M-N "Rain Rifle" with its Fire Sight front and swivel stud peep rear, also shown below.

I MIGHT take out a sporterized SMLE No1 Mk3 this year, but it's pretty heavily modded - sythetic stock, scope, etc.

The only original condition milsurp I've taken out hunting is my Mosin Nagant M38.  I've taken it out hog hunting a few times.  Never got a shot with it, but I don't think it would have been a problem if I had.  The rest of them that I have are just too heavy and the balance seems off (not used to that much forward weight) for hunting.

Well, I took the old 1911 Schmidt Rubin out last night and tested her with the new Hornady Custom BTSP ammo in 50+mi/hr wind gusts and hit the 10x10 gong on the range off hand at 100 yards.  Guess she's good to go with this ammo too.  ;)

1891 gew 88 already knocked down a delicious doe from about 70 yds using 170 core-lokts. I've never has one move but about 10 yds after shooting. Passed up on the 5 pt buck that was following her, they just don't taste as good.

I thought PA required manually operated CF rifles for hunting.
