My M92 is GREAT!!
« on: October 02, 2010, 06:27:01 AM »
I finally got to the range yesterday to sight in  some rifles, including my Rossi M92 44 Mag.  This is the 24" octagon barrel model that I put a tang sight on.  I'd shot it a bunch with the factory iron sights and was already amazed at it's accuracy potential.

This rifle has to be one of the best shooters I've got!  Once I got the tang sight dialed in, 3 shots at 50 yards with my hunting handload made one ragged hole!   :o  And that with my 65 year old eyes!  I am one happy boy!

I sure am greatful to Teddy for posting that these rifles were on sale when he did!   :D

Yup mighty nice rifles. I wish I had kept one or both of the .45 Colt riles I had and do like my .357 mag. I'd like to pick up one in .44 mag some day to go with it.

I remember when I first started looking at these rifles Tacklebury.  Back in the pre-safety days.  I thought they cost to much then.  When I finally got one it was on clerance from Bud's but still more then the old gun show prices!   :-\  But look at what the '92's are going for now!   :o  Ain't nuthin getting any cheaper...  ;)

Funny how things work out Will'um... Some time back you told me if I wanted to hot rod a 45 Colt in a rifle get the '92.  I was looking at '73's at the time.  Then I got that great deal on the '73 in 45 Colt and it shoots great, but I don't want to load it up to the 45's potential in a rifle.  Now I have this '92 in 44 Mag that is amazing!  I can't believe I waited so many years to get one.

I 'spose, if I were to buy another lever gun, which isn't likely, it would be a Rossi carbine, maybe even a Trapper, in 45 Colt.

My first was a 20" full octagon barrel .45 Colt I picked up for my short forey into CAS which sure didn't last long. It was an EMF import and didn't have the safety. That rifle would shoot one hole groups and was a really nice one. I have no recollection of why I let it go or what I traded it on but I sure wish I still had it.

The second was a 24" or maybe 26" .45 Colt with brass or at least brass look frame. I got it from ShaneR on here and then he later wanted it back so I let him have it back for what I had given him for it. It too was more accurate than my tired old eyes were able to take advantage of.

My current one is an LSI import .357 magnum with 20" round barrel. It sure is a light little rifle that packs a decent punch and again is more accurate than my eyes can take advantage of with the open sights. Still I'd like likely want to use the .357 on big game past 50-75 yards and me and it are more than accurate enough for that.

I really wish I'd kept both the others in .45 Colt and I'd still like to pick up another in that chambering and one in .44 mag as well.

Oh well there are a LOT of guns I've had and let go of that I sure would like to have back.

Show is!   ;D  I likes 'em!  But after having to adjust that Williams GS on the '94 I'm just about convinced I need to put a Lyman 66 on it!  I NEED click adjustments!   ;)

Ain't it the truth!   :-\  I stopped letting go of any gun I have years ago but am still haunted by the memory of things like 2 P08 Lugers, Fox BSE 20 ga. and the like...  :-[

The Marbles tang sights are click adjustable also in case you didn't know. I wish my 3030 was a 24" barrel like my Model 92, and I could still use the Lyman 66. :(

I have a Rossi M92 .357 mag with the 16" barrel. Its nice and handy. I recently put a marbles tang sight on it. I need to get it out and work with it some more but I recently got a TVM flintlock Tennessee rifle that I have been absolutely enamored with and every chance I get to got to the range its what I grab. There just isnt enough hours in the day is there?

I put a Marbles on mine also.  As Dee said, click adjustable.  I also believe Dee has a 92 Rifle style in 357 with the Marbles.  As I remember he said it was very accurate.

Dee, I don't know why I didn't get a 66 right off.  Trying to "make do" with a cheaper sight I guess...  :-[  But I've learned!   ;)  I only wish they still made them outa steel.   :(

Those 92's are addicting.  Unfortunately I had to let my 24" oct barreled 44mag go.  As much as I liked it, every time I picked it up instead of my stainless 20" that I got a good buck with I felt like I was cheating and doing something wrong.  I really think my first 92 is my "lucky" gun and I'll keep it for forever.  Over there at Buds, you can still get a great buy on these guns and if I hit the lottery I'll order one of every kind they have, but I'd probably still hunt with my orignal one.  One things for sure, those are the best value for the money spent on a short range hunting rifle.  Everyone who's held or shot mine wants to go out and buy one.

Post some pictures of how you've got yours setup with those new sights!  I want to see what you did.

Darn Teddy!  Did you get rid of the new one you bought?   ???  The one you went through all the changes with trying to get the sights set up?   ???

I'll post pictures, hopefully with a nice fat doe for background.  The 92 is the first rifle out of the chute this year.   :D

Yeah that's the one.  It was kinda heart breaking but I had to let something go and it drew the short straw.  The setup I had was great and I liked hunting with it, but one thing I noticed is that when it got even just a little bit wet it would start to show some surface rust quicker than any other gun I've used in the rain.

Glad to see you guys are getting good accuracy with your 24" Rossi 44mags.  What grain bullets are you using?  I currently have a 24" .357 and shoot at steel rams @200yds with cast bullets.  The spotters have trouble seeing my hits.  It's an eye thing b/c I had one of them shoot my gun and I saw all the hits OK.  Anyway, wanted to try the 44 mag with 240 or 300gr cast bullets and if it's accurate enough I'll transfer my marbles tang and front sight over and sell the .357.
My .357 has a barrel that was put into the receiver at an angle so I have to drift the front sight almost all the way to the left and crank the marbles almost all the way to the right to get on target.  So I'm hesitant to order from online since I can't inspect the rifle first.  Last couple of gunshows I've seen new Rossis but no 24" 44mag.  They had a 20" 44mag and the barrel was on straight but canted to the right so the front sight was at an angle.  The best value in a lever action but you gotta check them before you buy.

My load was a Hornady 240 gr. XTP ahead of 20.5 gr. of 2400.  A good shooting load.  Using it in my Ruger SBH Bisley Hunter also.

Great thanks!  I had read that the 44mag rifle had a slower twist rate than normal and that might affect the heavier bullets.  Glad to see that's not the case.

AFAIK, all Rossi M92 levergun barrels have the same rifling twist (1:20 IIRC), regardless of chambering (.357, .44, .45).

Yes, that's what I would hope for.  Should handle the 300gr .44 rounds just fine.  But I had read somewhere that the twist on the 44 was 1:29 or so.  Maybe it was fixed back when they had overbored .44 barrels and fixed them.

The gun and load worked GREAT!  Dispite the worst opening week I've seen in years, the 92 knocked a baby Bambi flat, going in high in the shoulder and coming out low, just in front of the last rib on the off side.  Leg of fawn for T'giving and Christmas!   ;D

I've got no reservations about the 92 or the XTP at all!   ;D  It's nice to have a rifle that you know will put a bullet just where you want it to go.   ;)

I'm happy with my two, a 20" round barell .44 and a 16" round barell 357.  The only problem is now I want Ruger Blackhawks in both calibers.

Ain't it great to step back in time,

It sure is!   ;D  I had thought my days of shooting non-scoped weapons were over!  But I'm having a blast with my lever guns and even handguns!  And I'd forgotten how easy carrying a M-94 is!   ;)

I am going to use my EMF Harford (92 clone) in 45 LC carbine (20 inch barrel) deer hunting this fall.  My buddy's land is all brush and woods. No shot more than 50 yards.  I use the rifle in SASS so there is nothing I shoot more.  I am going to use Hornady's leverevolution bullets.  I think it will do the job just fine and won't be a load to carry like my 30-06.

I also have the Hartford 92 in .45, it has a 24" oct. and the Marbles click adjustable tang sight, the tang sight was worth every penny, no more wacking a barrel sight around for that one. If I ever see 24" Hartford model in .357 I'll buy it on the spot and put a Marbles tang on that too.  I could have one thumper and one that shot flatter, and they both would look identical.  Still have the Lyman 66 on my 94, I like clicks over having to loosen screws and slide things around. Saves time sighting in for different loads and you can write down how many clicks are for certain loads, no need to sight in again when you change loads.

I have a Lyman 66 all steel on my Model 94, AND a Marbles tang. The Lyman is for close in shots, as I can still see the front sight thru it well enough of that, and the Marbles tang is zeroed at 225 yards and closer. Real good clear front sight with that.
I have a Lyman 66 on my Model 92 clone also a 24" octagon, and will eventually put a Marbles tang on it, but with the extra barrel length the front sight is still sharp and clear.

I just got a 92 in 357, and just ordered one in 45lc (not here yet). I love the feel of the 357 it has a 24" oct. barrel and the 45lc is the same I can't wait to get it and shoot it. I am wanting to use them for deer and hog hunting, deer next year and hog this year.
