The bears seem to be getting bigger in Wisconsin lately. Some 700+ pound bears shot this year. In my bow hunting areas, I have seen many tracks, both very large and small. Sooooooooooo I am thinking about bringing a large hand gun for maybe, just the sense of security or an actual emergency. A Ruger Blackhawk with a 4 3/8 inch barrel and a 45 long Colt chambering with 310 cast at maximum charge. This is a compact gun with lots of power and a feeling of confidence. Ya, I know, another bear verses hand gun thread.

Cheesehead, sounds like you have a very clear handle on the situation, the only thing I would do differantly is use my 6.5" raging bull, 45lc of course.
 All I shoot is a 320 grain keith, with a max load of AA9.

I clocked some 360 grain wide flat nose GC lead bullets at 1175 fps before I cut the barrel down from 7.5" to 4.625".  (loading manual data).  Recoil was wicked before I replaced the standard cowboy grip frame with the bisley frame. 

The standard Ruger black aluminum grip frame would provide a nice weight reduction.  I think I've got some laying around somewhere; probably have to modify for the bisley hammer.  Too bad someone doesn't make an aluminum bisley grip frame.

I usually have my Springer 1911 with 230gr. roundball or Hydrashoks. I am thinking of getting a threaded barrel....threaded for bear nostrils. LOL
