SBR 1/7th scale IX-inch Dahlgren Shell Gun
« on: October 02, 2010, 07:22:41 PM »
This was waiting for me when I got home Thursday (took longer than I figured), and I don't mind telling you that I was one happy canoneer. 'South Bend Replica' 19-inch long Dahlgren with a 1-inch bore, and after a thorough examination my review is: "Nice!" Now this is what I call a proper kitchen table centerpiece, of course my wife isn't in total agreement with my decorating taste.

Guys I now realize that if I had taken all the pics with the daylight at my back that the photos would be a lot better, but in my defense it had been a long day, and I was in a state of ecstasy, so I didn't know what the heck I was doing. :P

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

I agree, esthetically the Dahlgren has one of the most pleasing forms.  (In my humble, but accurate, oppinion.)

Boom J,

Congrats on the new toy! If you need I'm sure Dom can make you a nice little carriage for it. He made one for mine.

If you make it idiot proof, then, someone will make a better idiot.

Really nice looking barrel!  Perhaps the wife would like it better on the table if it were mounted in a carriage rather on pieces of box strewn all over?

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Intoodeep, I also like the iron Marsilly carriage that Dom made fine models of, but I'm planning on making the wooden Marsilly carriage to mount it on (I like your dad's); I'm going to get the drawings from 'Antique Ordnance Publishers'.

sometimes have , sometimes not
but even if I have , as now for example I still use the kitchen table as a table when needed  ;D
I also use my chairs for sitting and my bed for sleeping
so I cant see any problem in messing up the table a bit if you clean it when finished
so ok dd , man or mouse ??   ;D ;D

Hey, it woudn't matter if that barrel were sitting in the middle of the table on top of a silver platter covered with roses, she'd still think that the gun was an eyesore. ;)

he he he , ok I understand , but I also know why .

you guys just dont try hard enough   ;D

why use a silver platter when it could be gold or platinum ??
and of course not use roses when you can have orchids  ;D

or do as I do  ::)

both carriages were built from the same plans.  the scale cannon is a SBR, and the full size is one of a pair at Trinity College in Hartford CT.

Those are two beauties Lendi, and they both display your high level of craftsmanship; I've been wanting this barrel matched with a wooden Marsilly ever since I first laid eyes on Cpt Ed's.

Thanks, Bruce.

Boomj, Here are a few pics of the ignition assembly.  I have the impression that this is a SBR accessory but no way to prove or disprove it. Supposedly the original 9" guns came with two vents predrilled in offset location like on this model.  Sorry about the leg mixup, the idea that anyone was looking at my legs kind of threw me off center there.

Pete,
I asked Paul at South Bend Replica about the lock, and they didn't make it. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about ignition yet, but I am definitely going to install a vent liner.
