Longest shot made with a blackhawk or Super redhawk?
« on: October 03, 2010, 11:43:50 AM »
I have a GP-100 with open sights, 100 yards with .357 is about the most I would want to do from a bench, and that was real tricky at best as I cannot guarantee shot placement, only that I could hit a piece of typing paper.  Wondering what the Black hawk or Super Redhawk would do for distance with a mounted scope and chambered in .44 magnum or .454 Casull?

I saw some You Tube footage of hog hunts and some of the shots were way out there, the guy was using an AR-15.  I thought the revolver would be more interesting on hogs due to the heavier bullet.

I also read of a guy shooting .44 magnum at 200 yards, if I knew the drop rate and had a scope I might try it from a rest.  Not sure on the humane killing power though?

What is the furthist that you have shot your .44 or .454 for target and/or hunting?

Thanks.

I've heard of guys using a scoped Super Redhawk in .454 making 150-200 yard shots.  The furthest I can consistently hit with my 5.5" Blackhawk is about a 14" group at 100 yards freehand.  From a bench it's slightly better.  At 75 yards I can freehand closer to 8", so I consider my 5.5" .45 Colt to be max range with iron sights about this distance.  At 50, I can get closer to a 4" group.  I don't have a ransom style rest or anything, and with something like this you might bump this up slightly.

I killed a prairie dog at 67 and another at 63 yards with a 6.5" 357 shooting 125 gr bullets. Factory sights leaning over the pickup hood.

Years ago I shot a 4-3/4" group at 100 yards with my Ruger .45 cal. Blackhawk off of sandbags.  I got lucky.

Earlier this summer I hit a full can of pop at 100 yards on the second shot using a 7-1/2" F.A. .454......and it
flew straight up for 20 feet.  ;D

Open sights, of course.

My former firearms instructor has been seen shooting groundhogs at 125 and 150 yards on several occasions at the range. The gun used a S&W Model 10 38 special.
He is mentioned in the 2nd book Death from Afar. He just passed away several weeks ago. Practice Practice and more practice.

Off the bench, I have been able to shoot 2 inch groups at 50 yards with my .41 mag SBH with a 2x Leupold and 5 inch groups at 100 yards. I have also shot 5.5 inch groups at 100 yards with my .41 mag 5.5 inch Bisley and iron sights, but I cannot do that consistently. With a field rest, I will probably limit my shots to about 75 yards.

At the farm, I can shoot at zero to 100 yards off one bench and can set up again to shoot at 500-800 yards. Makes for some interesting shooting.

Couple of weeks ago I was trying out a load in my Super Blackhawk and decided to see what it would do on the hundred yard berm.  We were in a hot line and I really didn't have a target so I sighted on a dirt clod and powdered it, then found a styrofoam cup on the berm and splintered it.

That pistol shoots a whole lot better than I do.

I've hit spray cans at 100 yards with my 4 3/4" .45 Blackhawk off hand.

My best shot on an animal was a buck at 245 yds. off hand with a 3 screw 71/2" SBH, 250 keith and 22 grs. H110.  With that same load and gun I broke the world IHMSA record for standing production (my 1st silhouette match) in 1976.  Hit all the chickens and pigs, didn't quite know where to hold on the 165 yd. turkeys, hit most of the 225 yd.rams but some didn't fall.  Then in about 1995 a bunch of us were at a NRA Hi power range on the 600 yd. line.  Someone wanted to see me shoot pistol so they got a 1 gal. yellow prestone antifreeze jug from their truck and put it on the backstop which is 30 yds. behind the targets making it 630 yds.  I had my 6" stainless SBH and some ammo loaded with 429244 and 21 grs. H240.  By holding the front sight including the ramp  above the rear sight and sitting the jug on top of the front sight i was able to hit it 3 times out of the 6 shots ( 2 solid hits and one just cutting the edge of the jug) the other 3 were all close. This was offhand.   I had shot from there before and knew how much front sight I needed to hold up.  I was the talk of the coffee shop for awhile after that. I still have both of those guns and NO, I wouldn't bet i could do it again but it wouldn't be the guns fault if I didn't.

I have a 30 carbine Blackhawk with a 4X scope on it.  About a month ago I was testing some loads for my Thompson Contender pistol and decided to put some rounds through the Blackhawk and see what it could do.  At 100 yards, on a pistol rest, I can shoot 5 inch groups repeatedly.  Keep in mind, these were test loads for my T/C, not custom loaded for the Blackhawk.  I'm sure I could do a little better with adjusted loads.

About three months ago I fired my open sighted 45 Colt Blackhawk (7.5 inch) from a pistol rest at a 5.5 inch circle target posted at 50 yards.  I put 10 rounds in 4.25 inches.

I use my Blackhawks a LOT when shooting at prairie dogs.  I have hit many out over 100 yards.  When my 30 carbine Blackhawk had no scope on it I managed to kill a prairie dog out at about 125 yards from a standing firing position.

I don't have a Redhawk but I'm thinking of getting one.  All I can say is that my Blackhawks are pretty darn accurate at some fairly long distances.

Since the title of the thread says "longest shot made with a Blackhawk", I guess it's appropriate to add this little story.  Last summer I was out in Wyoming and my buddy and I were standing on the top of a fairly high rise.....probably 500 ft high.  From the top we were challenging each other to shoot at some prairie dog mounds down below.  These mounds were probably around 400 yards out (maybe even a little further than that) and 500 ft down below.  Amazingly we were able to consistently shoot and HIT the mounds at that distance.  It sure took some time for those heavy bullets to get there though!....probably a good 2 second delay.

I broke a gobbler's neck at 60 yards with my Redhawk.  He weighed 21 1/2lbs and had a 10" beard.

With a 357 I use the 180gr. Saeco that I cast. Can hit a gallon jug at 200 yards. 158gr bullets do not seem to carry well past 100 yards. In the 44mag the 310gr cast will do the same.

My SBH Hunter in 41 mag with a 2 1/2X scope has shot groups just over an inch at 100 yards with the 229gr Saeco Truncated cone cast bullet. Normal is 2 to 3" at that range.

Back when handgun silhouette was the rage I started with an SBH loaded with Fed brass, CCI LP, 10 grains of Unique and homecast Lyman #429421. Knocked down every ram it hit and made it into AA standing with that revolver and load before I went to a Contender. A lot of people scoff at long range handgunning but you wouldn't want to be on the receiving end, even at that range. I don't know why but I never tried it on paper, just silhouettes. Probably would use a heavy 2400 or H110 load for hunting. And keep the range a lot shorter too.
Hold still while I overthink this.

There was a gun magazine article from the late 90's of a guy shooting a Ruger Blackhawk a full 1/4 mile and hitting balloons. I have the mag someplace i will start digging for it. I have shot my .44 BH Hunter at plates 200 yards and hit them but i put a few hundred rounds thru it first getting there...Bob

These stories bring back a flood of good memories from my young silhouette shooting days.  We were preparing for a match when a group of hunters wanted to check the zero of a 30.06. They tried to hit the turkeys at 385 meters off sand bags and after 30 rounds or so I mentioned they might need to let the barrel cool off as the wood was starting to smoke! The guy shooting said I what did I know I was just a popgun pistol shooter, If i knew so much, lets see how many turkeys I could hit.  Loaded my SBH  44 mag with Elmers favorite load and cleaned a bank of 5 turkeys with 6 shots.  Hunters promptly left the range muttering something about darned trick pistol shooters.

Best I can do 100yds, Ruger .357 max. 7.5" bbl. off bags.  Sights were those little fuzzy things somewhere on the top of the barrel.  I would bet that with a scope, this one would shoot 3" or less.  I have an old scoped Redhawk that will sometimes shoot 3" at 100, same with a 44 Bisley Hunter.  All off a bench over bags.  Off hand?  I don't shoot that way except at the usual handgun distances, which for me is 25 yards.

Vote them all out, EVERY election!

When I first started into shooting long range with a revolver I had a super blackhawk with a 4 5/8 barrel ( wouldn't mind having another it was a good shooter) I had a sand pit near by that you could shoot out to 1000yrd if you wanted to. (I used to read alot about Elmer that's how this all got started). I used to pick out rocks varying from 6" to a foot in diameter at various ranges out to 300-350 or so I did get to the point where I could hit them pretty consistantly. I never really put the SBH on paper to see what it would do. I ended up trading that revolver in for a 7.5" SRH in 454 the best I could get out of that was 3" at 100.  I traded the 454 a couple years back for a 500 smith. with open sights off a rest I've printed alot of 1.5" at 100 and alot of 3" groups at a 100 offhand. I'd probly have a hard time doing it now I haven't been practicing as much as I'd like due to others guns needing attention.

Best with a SBH was years ago when I had younger eyes. A friend had come up to the hunting club for the day and we had ridden scooters and did a lot of shooting on bottles at 45 -65 yards floating in the creek and at steel silhouettes we had in the front field. At the end of the day there were two steel turkeys standing at 200 yards. He handed me his SBH and said how many shots to take them down ? I was feeling kinda cocky so I said two birds, two bullets. Two freehand shots and two clang's later I handed him back his gun like it was supposed to happen that way. Truthfully I was expecting to be close but was surprised to go two for two freehanded at that distance.

Back in 1986, for my 21st birthday, I treated myself to a Bisley Blackhawk.  I wanted the .44 mag, but the only one I could find locally was a .357 Mag, so I settled for that.

Up at the family hunting camp, it was 125 yards from the back porch to the three-tier barbed wire fence.  With my arms resting on the porch railing, I could hit one of the fence posts, going 5 for 6 at least and sometimes 6 for 6.

I shot and killed a feral goat with it once at a tick over 150 yards.  Two shots into the lungs, with the shots being 2 to 3 inches apart.

Pop cans and clay pigeons at 100 yards were hit with almost boring regularity, too.

I don't have the .357 anymore, but recently bought an N.I.B 44 mag. Bisley of the same vintage and am hoping it'll shoot as good as my old one did.
