Another 30-06???
« on: October 03, 2010, 12:18:13 PM »
Since my old orginal revelation(western auto) manufactured by mossberg from 1972 is getting old now i was thinking about replacing her with a new 30-06.  I found the remington model 770 in 30-06 for $315 with a scope/rings.  Does anyone own a new remington 770 yet???  I see there offered in 300win mag and in 308win too.

Have you thought about a used M700 & then watch for a deal on a scope? You could close the gap & get a good rifle that way.

The only low cost rifle I would consider is the Stevens 200 or if you got the extra $ get a Savage.

I would not consider the rem 770 .They are a POS
Rather look AT the Marlin XL7 line  They shoot good right out of the box.

Yes, he did not ask about another brand, but the Marlin would be my choice for that price.

I have to agree with the others;  stay away from the 770.  A Stevens 200, savage edge or the Marlin would all be better choices for a lower end gun.  A local Sports Academy had their rem 700 ADLs for $359, this with the new triggger and recoil pad.  No scope but its still better than the POS that will come with the 770.
Best of luck,

I'll look at the others and forget about the 770 remington.  I may even go used for a 700 or even a 70 if the cost is right. maybe walmart has something in the gun go-round too.

Man, I really have to agree with one of the prior posts.  Buy a used Rem. 700 ADL, made in the 1970s up through the middle 1980s.   They are everywhere in really good shape.  They shoot well and hold their value.  Why pay good money for cheap piece of junk, just to get something brand new?  Once you shoot it, it too will be a "used" rifle.

I recently bought a 'used' rifle with less than 20 rounds through it,(I know(seller said) but it does look like the less than 20). There are plenty of slightly used rifles available for possibly much less than retail, FTF private seller. You can even have it shipped to your FFL & come out ahead.

If you can't find a good used Rem 700 don't pass up a Savage especially if it has the accu-trigger. I am a Rem 700 man but the Savage is a better bang for your buck in new rifles. Don't get sucked in to those Wal-Mart type deals with the rifle scope combination. Those scopes are junk and the mounts and rings are junk also. Look at it this way. If you pay $500 for a good rifle and $500 for a good scope and mounts you have $1000 in a good set up. If you keep and use the rifle for 20 years it has only cost you $50 a year. That is pretty cheap for all the good memories you will have.

I would RUN, not walk away from the Remington M770.  It is truly a piece of junk compared to a used or new M700, Ruger, Savage, Marlin, Weatherby, Howa, etc.  I wouldn't buy a Mossberg, either.

For a new rifle in that price range, if I couldn't find a nice used one from the manufacturers above, I'd get a Marlin or Savage or Stevens.

The Remington M770's are designed to be cheap to manufacture and they show it in every aspect.

A Model 700 is a current model.  ;)
Why would a used Model 700 have to be old since they are currently being made & why would an older Model 700 be less desirable than a newer M700 if both are in the same condition?  ???

I have quite a few brand new or low round used guns.
Any of the 700 have parts available.
Same with a Ruger M77,  Just picked up two years ago from a friend for $325 with an old red field scope.
I have picked up a few used 30-06 from friends or just saw a good deal sitting on the shelf
Heck my Winchester M70 super grade in 338 Win mag came with 5 boxes of ammo and a Weaver 4.5-14 X 40 AO grand slam scope for $650.00 8 years ago.  The shop owner said he sold the rifle to the previous owner with 7 boxes.  And he had a partial box in the back.  So it had maybe 40 to 200 rounds through it, guessing he sighted in the rifle and purchased a few more boxes.
Same with a Remington 700 SPS in 223 with another Weaver grand slam scope with 300 rounds of ammo for $1,000 and the guy purchased it with 500 rounds of ammo.  So basicly it was broke in for me and I saved $450 on the package.

I put around 1,000rds thru my old '06 but 99,9% of people here don't shoot that many rounds thru there rifles.  So finding a used '06 at an awesome price just maybe doable in excellent condition.  I found a sears rifle in '06 and  savage in '06 for under $300.  I need to look up to see who manufactured the sears rifle.  I'd like to have an extra '06 hunting rifle too so maybe 2 will do.  With the kids hunting having an extra '06 isn't bad on a trip away from home.  I been finding affordable rifles in 300win mag too. (used but still looking like new)  Maybe i should bump up to another caliber?

I was thinking about waiting till after hunting season to look for a traded in rifle.  I heard that some guys buy new rifles every hunting season and trade them in after hunting season.  I can get a used once rifle at a used price and its still new. What do you think?

So many options..... ;D

+1

To many good alternatives out there; Savage, used M-700 (what I did) the new Mossberg...

My first .30-06 was the Sears brand.  Sears had Winchester manufacture rifles for them and they put their name on it.  There were some minor differences.  I was looking at a Winchester Model 70 and the Sears rifle side by side. Information with the Sears rifle noted that it was manufactured by Winchester.  The differences were:  stock was hardwood stained walnut.  The bolt was plain (not jeweled).  The rear sight was different from the Model 70.  For about $100 less, I got a Winchester Model 70 action in a different stock and different rear sight.  It shot 3 shots into 2.5 inches with iron sights at 100 yards.  I did not scope it for 5 years.  When I did, the groups tightened up to under 2" regularly.  Then it was stolen from me on election day, 1980, when my house was burglarized.   :(

Because many "old" guns are in excellent shape (like new), cost considerably less than new, and shoot extremely well.  Over half my rifles were gently used when I acquired them and I challenge anyone to tell which I acquired new or used on the basis of how they shoot or look.

Ruger M77, mfg 1989, acquired like new in 2004:

Remington M700 BDL. mfg 1975, acquired like new in 2005:

Ruger M77, mfg 1984, acquired in almost like new condition in 2006:

Recently I purchased a stainless/laminate Ruger MKII .30-06, in like new condition, and it has been shooting .5MOA consistently.  Don’t have the manufacture date handy but I think it was 2002-2004, will have to check when I get home.

The point is there are a lot of high quality “used old guns” available and they can save the buyer hundreds of dollars – often enough to get a decent scope and still save the buyer money over the cost of a new rifle alone.

Sorry for asking about new only but the used idea came up too in our posts.  My 30-06 now(older one) is an older mossberg made for western auto (revealtion)and its been an awesome rifle and its still accurate,  but nows it so old its collectable and since it still looks like new i figured to retire it now while its still purdy lookin.  The metal and wood is still flawless since i'm the orginal owner from '72.

our local walmart has rem 700 camo matte blued guns in 270 o6 and 7mag for about 450 out the door. Thats about the steal of the century on a nice deer rifle. I need one in 7 mag myself but the money short till after the first of the year with deer season and christmas right around the corner. If there still the same price then one will be in the safe.

Just $450 that is a steal for a Remington 700 too.  I'd also like to add a few more calibers to my collection of hunters too and 7mm rem mag is one of them.  Since i reload for the 7mm mauser I can reload for both calibers using the sme bullets. My wish list is growing now.

if i had the choice i would never buy a remington 770, but a few years ago a good friend of mine was having money trouble and had one in 270 i bought if off him just to help out and i tell you now i will never sell that gun it one of the few factory guns i have had that has shoot good right out of the box. i was getting 3/4 moa with factory remington and just under half moa with a 130gr nosler reload. gun shoot great but still for the money i would get a savage

Since you mentioned a used 700, keep this in mind: you might keep an eye out for a used Remington Sportsman 78.  They are a store brand Remington 700 under a different name.  Literally the same gun (kinda like the Marlin 30AS which was the 336 with plainer stocks), but for whatever reason they seem to go for a little less.  I saw one in .30-06 about a year ago that the shop wanted $300 for (and with some negotiation I've ALWAYS gotten them to come down 25% on what they list).  The deals are out there.  Kinda wish I hadn't passed that up but at the same time, I got two .30-06's already and didn't need another :).

I'll go with the others though and say that I'd personally not go for the 770 at all.  I've never shot it, but I have shot it's previous incarnation - the 710.  The accuracy wasn't bad, but the scope was essentially a throw away and there were many undesirable things about the rifle that Remington never fixed (not to mention that it had a very cheap feel in the hand).  Out of the budget rifles I'd go with the Stevens 200, Marlin XL7, Mossberg ATR, and then finally the Remington 770, in that order.

Or you could rebarrel the Mossberg model 810 (the Revelation by Western Auto is one) with a new barrel from these guys  https://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=7718  .

If you do decide to get another gun you probably won't be happy without another adjustable trigger since the Western Auto Revelation has one. They came stock.

And if you don't want to bother with the rebarrel job I'm interested in the old Revelation for re-barrelling myself. ;D

Just my 2¢.
