300 Ruger Compact Mag

Any one shooting the ruger compact mag ?
The short barrel and loads comparable to the 300/338 WM 's appeal to me .

I have a winchester 70 in 300 WM and think the shorter barrel would be a plus, since most shots would be 200 yards or less.With the gun's 26" barrel in heavy cover you think your trying to turn arround with a broom stick in your hand

I would like to know a bit more about the gun as well as the cartridge Are they worth it, or should I stay with a 23" WSM ?
If any one has experiance with this rifles it would be of benifit

Guess the rifle is doomed as was the Remington short Mag series .
Apparently there is no interst in the calipier .

I guess my take on it is this. I like the 300 win and wby mags but my use for them is long range deer shooting. If I know that my shots will be under 250 yards i usually take a differnt gun. So the long 24 and even 26 inch barrels in the mags dont get in my way and help ballistics. Personaly i dont hunt a senerio where i would need a 20 inch 300 mag. At those ranges a 308 or 06 will do anything i ask of it and do it with less fuss. that been said i wouldnt mind one in 338 though for thumping bigger animals in the brush. Thats just me though and everyone hunts differnt and has differnt needs in a gun.

You think a 338 might be a good thing in heavy cover . Well I agree . you loose a few hundred FPS , but have the advantage of still over the power of a '06 .You don't need a 300o FPS , but a bigger rock into Papa Moose might be one he doesn't have a cork for .
I have an o6 with an 18 1/5 " barrel too .Maybe that should have been a whelen!!

I had a 358 BLR . The gun gave me nothing but grief so I sold it . this was a year before Ruger once again brought out the bolt 358 W , otherwise I would have bought one .
By chance trade ,I did acquire a T3 in 338 F and have grown to like it . took two deer with it last year .

But it is no 300 WM.
Now if the RCM was going to be the step up , I would consider it , I have two  '06 and the 338 F so that is what gets used . The 300 goes where the country is more open like a watch At a Hydro cut  or where there is a wood cut and shots could be long .

 I had a beautiful looking and shooting Browing Lever in 358 Win and let a friend talk me out of it.  That is many years ago he still has it and uses it for everything he hunts in BC.
It is a mid range cartridge. I was looking at the Ruger and decided the price was too rich for me and got that used Husky instead that is costing me more then the Ruger would have.
