The Worlds Worst hunting dogs
« on: October 04, 2010, 07:52:08 AM »
I have a chocolate Lab and a lemon beagle that I take for walks in the woods.  I need to call it that since they just don't hunt.   ???

I've seen the beagle chase rabbits the wrong way (rabbit going to my right and dog to my left) and the lab just looks at me waiting for me to throw a stick.  Well, she also fetches bobbers when fishing.  :-\

Even though I now have no expectation of getting anything I still like to take them with me on a woods walk about with a gun.  ;D

Does anyone else have dogs that are just lacking in hunt? :)

My chihuahua just lays in his little bed or on my lap.  Horrible hunter.  ;)  Course big squirrel weighs as much as he does.  8o

Could be your Beagle is tracking the rabbit in the wrong direction. This is common with young and or, inexperienced Beagles. If you get him on enough rabbits, he figure it out. As far as the Lab, she does what you taught her. She goes and gets sticks. That's also why she goes and gets bobbers. The instinct is there to retrieve but, it's misdirected. That is your fault not hers. Perhaps you can give her a book on retrieving to read. ;D

I gave her a book to read and all she did was look at the pictures?

"Send 'em to school, send 'em to school and all they do is scare the teachers"

Still, I'm going to take them for a run this morning.  Even if you don't catch a thing any time spent in the woods with dogs and guns is time well spent.

Just look at my avatar.  My boy parks his butt on the couch, and will not move.  I suppose if I really wanted a hunting dog, I would have gotten something different.

He's more of a companion than anything else, but I do take him for woods walks.  Don't see much though.  Its hard for a 180 pound mastiff to sneak up on anything!!

...And that's not even considering the flatulence situation....

Wouldn't give him up though.

I'd hate to walk thru your yard at night. Not because of the dog, but what he leave in it. I'll bet one pile would choke a riding lawn mower down. ;D

Redneck mine field - might make you want to give up that foot before you can go into the house.  :o

The blood will clean up easier and smell less that that AP mine  ;D .

I've been tempted on more than a few occasions.  Cecelia, the Chocolate Lab, weighs in at 90 pounds and leaves substantial :'(  .
Bweagle the beagle just leaves small hard twigs in comparison.

Let me put it this way:  You don't step in it, you trip over it!!!

The poop towers stand above the surrounding lawn and make it real easy to find and clean up.

The funny thing is that after he goes, the local crow population swoop down and dig thru it, spreading it in a 3-5 foot diameter from 'ground zero'.  I have to get right out there and clean it up as it takes no time at all for them to find it and have a party in it.  That's where it gets messy.   :-X

Sorry guys. He's not not much of a hunter, but one heck of a guard dog.  He is VERY protective of my wife and great with kids, with a huge heart.  I can't recommend this breed enough, but not for hunting.

Mine hunts my chickens; he's already scared one literally to death.

I'm gonna try to train him to hunt squirrels after deer season. H's 7 months old, now; his daddy was a saddleback Beagle, and his momma a brown lab. He's smart enough to fetch his 10-dollar tire toy, but too dumb to quit chasing chickens.  ;D

A shock collar, or bb gun can, and will, cure the chicken fetish.

Good idea. It took 2 or 3 spoonfuls of cayenne pepper to get him to quit sucking eggs. He's stubborn and has an extremely high pain threshold (judging from the way he runs through briar patches with reckless abandon), so I probably need to get the shock collar.

Harry I trained Police K-9s for a livin, and there's nothing harder chargin, or harder headed than a Belgian Malinois, or dumber than any bulldog, so your dog has got to be somewhere in between. I would turn the collar all the way up, just to let him know your serious. If he takes a step toward a chicken, light'em up, and I would take him with me, every time you feed the chickens.

When I was a kid, a buddy and I did a lot of coon hunting.  He gave me a Blue Tick / Walker cross pup from a litter he had with his best hunting dogs.  At about 6 months, took him hunting for the first time with a couple experienced dogs.  The first coon we shot, he ran to the truck.  Did it a second time, and after that, he refused to even follow us into the woods.  My buddy was so mad he wanted to shoot him.  He ended up being my mothers "lap dog".

Now I had an old, fat female Rottweiler that was murder on Pheasants.  She wouldn't point, but she stayed close to me, and flushed a lot of birds I would have missed, or that would have run off.  She even retrieved them, just had to be convinced to give em up.  I used to put an orange vest on her so other hunters wouldn't confuse her with a black bear.  Used to get a lot of strange looks..:)

My Rotties are good for alarm purposes but norhing for hunting. They have encountered wildlife but have no interest. But they hate strangers which is good. And they protect the family. Poor hunters but good family.

Nothing worse than a gun shy dog.  We have a yellow lab that I have been wanting to train for years, well 3 years,  but haven't done it and prolly won't as he doesn't even have any obedience training really.  Also from what I have heard is that choco labs are the dumbest of the lab breeds, because they had to breed them so hard to get the brown color.

Whatever it takes don't let him kill a chicken! I have seen several dogs ruined that way. Once they start it can be almost impossible to break them of it.

Shock collars.... One of the funniest things I ever saw was from a shock collar.
Little Brittany spaniel out quail hunting and was wet from the dew.
She took off across the road heading towards some other dogs.
Bobby touched the remote for the collar and that poor dog went completely
stiff legged, head pointed up at the sky and it's tongue was sticking straight out
of it's mouth. The sound it made was unlike anything I have ever heard come
from a dog. I felt bad about it but I couldn't help laughing.

I'd say there have probably been more dogs ruined than trained by shock collars.

If done incorrectly then ya,  unfortunetly I know several people that have.  My unlce has trained both his labs with collars and they are simply amazing to watch.

BB, not saying it can't be done, because it has.  But most that I have seen are just too "button happy".  Pretty much, if you can't train a dog without a shock collar, you can't do it with one.
