30-06 Handi does it again

Last night we were drifting the river when we came across a cow Moose.  My partner shot her with the 45-70.  But in a rocking boat his shot went too high and did not hit anything that would put her down in the spot.  She fell then got up and took off.  I was watching through my scope and when I saw her turn and look at us I squeezed off a shot.  180gr Nosler Partition, right between the eyes.  That was at seven in the evening.  Took us till midnight to dress it out and load it in the boat.  Gosh am I sore this morning.  You forget how big one of those creatures are till you have one lying on the ground.  Sorry it was too dark to make pictures last night.  It's getting dark now about 7:30 and we are losing seven to eight minutes a day.

Tim:  I was not so happy last night while skinning, cutting, and hauling those heavy cuts to the boat.  Along about 10:30 and 11:00 I was done in, but we could not stop.  

Bikerbeans:  Going back to see if maybe a Grizzly or Black Bear will find the gut pile.  That would be great and truley make up for the lost hunt earlier.

My Dad summed it up pretty good a few years back when he shot a Moose with my .35 Whelen Handi.  As Dad stood there looking at the animal, he shook his head and said,  "Lordy, lordy, where do we start"!  My Dad a farm boy was totally stunned by the size of a medium sized Moose.  If he had shot a big one he would have been blown away.

Temp is in the 40s now during the day, and 20s at night.  With temps like that there is no hurry processing the meat.  We'll do the ribs, and neck meat tomorrow.  Wednesday either the front shoulder, or a rear qtr.  We will continue like that till all the steaks and roast are cut and wrapped.  Then we will start grinding, bag it and freeze it.  Later during the winter my partner and his wife will take out what they want to make into sausage.  Regrind it, mix in the seasoning, then put it in caseings.  Once cased they will cook it into some of the best sausage you ever tasted.

Should be able to get something on the gut pile.Last year I shot a deer and carried him down to the road. Went back in just for aa check and make sure I didn't leave anything and dang if I didn't have to carry a blackie back down with me.Could not have been more than a half hour down and up but he was hungry. I was almost scared to make my next final check but I made noise and all was clear.Double blood on the little 45BC on first trip and with 45coltLE ammo

S. E. Ak:  Just think that could have been a Brownie.  You know how they are conditioned down in your neck of the woods to gun shots.

For those of you that don't know, the bears down in South Eastern Alaska have become conditioned to come running at a gun shot.  They know there is a gut pile there.  And if they are fast enough (before the hunter) there will be a whole deer.

Would it be considered baiting to fire a shot then hide & wait when you have a Bear tag?   ::) ::)
