Range report 454 Casull
« on: October 04, 2010, 05:41:08 PM »
Shot 6 rds, 3 loaded with 36.2grs 1680, 3 more with 35.5grs over a 240gr xtp mag.  Looks like the 35.5 gonna get the nod for opening day.  Oh, the other 3 were were 2-2.5 inch group.

A 240gr (Hornady) XTP comin' outta a 454Casull ?? Did you not intend to post 300gr ??

I have had good luck with the 300gr XTP Mag outta both my 6" Taurus and my 16" LSI/Rossi, Casull's. One tough bullet. Will penetrate any deer and most of the bigger hogs. ---SAWMAN

Sawman,
Nope, it is a 240gr xtp mag.  Would like to try some 300's though.

Pete,
Go for it............I think mine actually shoots the casull loads a little better.

Your ab-so-toot-lie right sir. Frankly,I didn't know that a 240gr was produced for the .452" cal.

A 240gr,even loaded to the moderate pressures outta a Casull, must absolutely be screamin'. I have gotten some rather high velocities with the Cast Performance 265gr WFNGC's. 2000+fps outta my 16" carbine. BUT....they still penetrate very well. My "normal" bullets are the 335's.

A long bbl'ed Casull .....OR..... a 460S&W would indeed be "very interesting". I do believe however that with the above two, there is a limit to which you could actually use all that bbl. Probably somewhere around the 22" mark. This, unless you could find some super-dooper powder.---SAWMAN

I never have shot such light weights thru mine. But it sure shoots the 300's well enough!! Shoots better as a 454 than it did as a 45 COLT!! I have shot 250, 260, 300 and 310's with good success. On game with 454 I only use the 300's.

Mine didn't shoot the same favored 45 COLT loads thru the longer chamber. But just a bit of extermination found a new favorite load. The very first 454 loads went into nearly one hole at 50!

Good luck with yours, I sure like mine!!

BB,
 Mine is a factory CR45LC barrel I re-chambered to 454. So 20" IIRC.

Range, well for me its a close range gun. I would say 100 to 150 yards max.
Velocity, well I was perfectly happy with the power of the 45 COLT hot loaded. So my 454 loads are not hot by any means. I would guesstimate under 1500fps.

I have killed a truck load of whitetails with my my 1894 Marlin 45 COLT and "Ruger" level loads. I liked the looks of the new spritzer bullets and didn't feel comfortable loading them hot to get them to perform. SO, I made the handi barrel a 454 and never have to worry.

4-D reamer rentals is where I got it from.  They will rent you one without the 100 or so dollars deposit fee if you use a credit card.  The 45 colt took about 30 minutes going slow to turn it into a 454 hotrod.  Be sure and paint the rim cut so you can see when the cutter touches, use a magnifying glass if your eyes are the least bit tired.  You don't want to deepen the rim cut.
