name brand versus 'generic'

  cheesehead made a post about his bike battery a while back.  he had to get a new one and was faced with a few choices.  he ended up asking questions and one battery was made in the usa, another overseas.  he bought the one made in the usa.    after i read that, i vowed to do the same when buying things.   
   twice now, i have had the choice of name brand items versus generic brand.   both times, with spark plugs and with light bulbs, the name brand was made either overseas or in mexico.   while the generic brand are made in the usa; and cheaper.   
  i guess my point is, when out and about getting this or that, take a second to read the box and see where things are made at.   if you can buy american AND cheaper, i say it is win-win.  something to try.

Ive been doing that for a while. Ive even decided to pay up to 20% more for products made in the USA.  To me its simple, Any dollar that leaves the USA never makes it back. It doesnt always work though. Sometimes you cant find what you,re looking for made in the USA. But you gotta at least ask. Good post myronman3

yes, i agree. i am willing to pay a premium for "made in america".  but i am finding out that i usually do not have to, as the items that are made in america have been considerable cheaper.

Don't discount salvation army/goodwill and other thrift stores for American made products. Good quality at a reduced price.

While a good deal, buying used American goods does defeat the idea behind "buying American".  The producer really only gets paid for the first sale (rights to reselling items are protected by a legal idea called "first sale doctrine").  Subsequent sales are really just trading money between the later owners of the item, not the producer.  Specifically, when you buy a used item you hurt the manufacturing industry because you deprive them of revenue that they would receive if you were buying new. 

Not demonizing buying used at all (I certainly do it), but as a matter of supporting industry, it does nothing.  Video game companies (where America strangely enough has taken the world lead in development from the former leader Japan) have specifically been fighting the used market heavily.  Some of that is a move towards downloadable content that gets tied to an account (and so can't be transferred), as well as having one-time use codes included with new games so that you need the code to enable part of the game and tie it to an online account.  Selling the game second hand makes transfer of the code impossible, and so anyone buying used can't use the full game (without paying the original manufacturer for a code alone, thereby ensuring that they receive some revenue from each person that buys, even used).

Has anyone ever tried buying toys made in America?  It is NOT an easy task.  Even a lot of the truly American games, like Monopoly, scrabble, hotwheels cars, Barbie Dolls etc. are mostly molded and packaged elsewhere.  Any Disney or Nickelodeon toy is ALWAYS made in China or Mexico, even the little nic nacks at Disney World!!!!!   A lot of kids clothes are the same way!  My children often want a specific this or that and there isn't a made in America option!  Why would one of the BIGGEST markets in this country not have major manufactures here?  The only stuffed animals that I have ever found made in America are the ones you create yourself at the build a bear workshop, but if you look at the outfits to put on them, some of them even sewn made in China!

Sometimes it only takes an extra minute to find American made. Sometimes it is hard work, but worth it. It gives me a very good feeling to buy American. I scolded one of my co-workers that was bitchin about the economy while showing off his new hunting boots, make in CHINA.   >:(  :'(

I drive an American made SUV.

I shoot American made guns(except for the Rossi Carbines).

But there's no co-pay on the generic Cialis.

I'm putting down a sand point for a customer today.Galvanised pipe-Made in VietNam,Couplings-Made in Korea,Sandpoint-Made in China.I can't find American made pipe at any of the suppliers any more.One did have some earlier this year and I bought all they had.$24.00 for a 5' joint of pipe.The import is $18.00.At least the pump and tank are made in the USA.I'd gladly buy the USA marked if I could get it.BUT i'd have to pass the cost on.Slow

Not all of them ! I buy the men that work for me boots each year. Been doing so for 19 years until last year when we had nothing to by with due to the lack of work. Over that 19 years i watched Red Wing go from American made to junk. The few made here are made of off shore materials and are not the old quality.

   My Rocky boots say made in the USA. Checked a couple other pairs i have. All say made in Mexico. No wonder i couldn't keep my feet warm in the darn things.
