Name That Gunfighter 8
« on: December 07, 2003, 01:52:16 PM »
Each ___?___ below represents the name of the gunfighter in question. Source for this post is Joseph G. Rosa’s The Gunfighter Man or Myth?

___?___, a former Confederate soldier, deputy sheriff, and Ranger, was six feet two inches tall.  He had hazel eyes and auburn hair, a broad, pale face, and a granite jaw.  He was said to be utterly fearless and capable of killing without compunction.  The townspeople felt that at last they had a strong man in charge.  Disdaining holsters, ___?___ stuffed his two short-barreled, silver-plated, pearl-handled .45 Colts into leather-lined hip pockets.  Even when he was wearing a frock coat, he seemed to have no difficulty getting the revolvers into action.

Howdy Hamp,

How was the wedding?  Guess ya made it back just fine.

I'm thinking that is ol' DS, but I'll have to double check.

Wedding was great, but guess 14 years of living in the Texas Hill Country spoiled me.  Hadn't been there in several years, and wasn't really prepared for Houston's traffic, which has gotten worse since my last visit.  Made it back home more or less intact, however.

Gunfighter 8 is not Doc Scurlock (that is who you meant, isn't it?  chuckle)

Howdy, Cheyenne.

Think we've had this discussion once before.  Glad to see you around here again.  Was wondering what happened to you.

Pretty sure Hext had it right - was just raggin' on him about Scurlock.

Howdy,

Just like little brother Cheyenne to try and sneak in on this.
The leather lined pockets gave it away.  It's interesting that in JWHardin's autobiography, he claimed to have lined his pockets with leather as well.. hmmm, I wonder where he came up with that idea?

Hamp,

I read that Dallas Stoudenmire was born in Aberfoil, Alabama.  Aberfoil is in Bullock County.
Do you know if there are any other gunfighters that were born in Alabama besides Dallas and Pat Garrett(Chambers County)?

Here's a list of links pertaining to 'bama boys, some notable and some obscure, who made it out west and at least were interesting enough for someone to record their exploits/misdeeds.  Not all are "gunfighters", however.

This next link is an article written by Skeeter Skelton (now deceased), a modern-day lawman, who wrote many articles for Shooting Times magazine during its early years.  It includes some info on Stoudenmire.
