Stub/rebore-rechamber project

To stay compliant with the Louisiana primitive rifle rules, I must use a .38 or larger cartridge.  I currently shoot a .444 Marlin since my factory choices are either that or 45-70 for a solid 200 yard whitetail cartridge at or above .38 in a H&R.  I want something different, just to do it.  Since .375 rounds up to .38, that is what I would like to make.  I considered the 38-55, but they are hard to find and expensive when found.  Also they apparently do not shoot the widely available .375 jacketed bullets very well.  So, my next Handi will have a custom barrel with a .375 bore, but what chamber? 

Anyone have a better suggestion than the .375 JDJ for my purposes?

Thats what I was wanting to do with my Handi. I wish H&R would come on with a 375 Win barrel.

I believe that the 375JDJ will beat the 375Win with any weight bullet out of any bbl length. If you reload for the 444Marlin you can most easily make your brass also.

My vote would be for the JDJ. Make sure to twist it for the intended bullet. There is no such thing as over stabilization. ---pruhdlr

From the point of view of availability of components, and in a pinch, ammo - go with the 375 Win (at least Winchester still makes the ammo).  As you say, not a big difference in performance and in a handi on an SB2, you can load them on the warm side.

Yes please give some more details about the 375... it would be a great all around big game cartridge.

I would love a 375 myself, the only other caliber (other than the 327 Federal) that I would buy in a minute is the 405 Winchester. I am just about at the end of my collecting days, but any of the above I still have room for.

I shoot 220 grain Hornady bullets at about 2250 fps using Reloader 7.  I bought this barrel already finished so I am unsure of what it began as. It shoots 2" groups all day long with a Leupold 4x.   Sometimes better when my eyes are good and my nerves are steady.  I have it in a set of TDC stocks and feel it is a near perfect rifle.   It shoots like a 375 JDJ does out of a 14" contender so I assume with the proper bullet, it will kill anything on the planet.   ;D

I have a 405 in an encore and I too wish it came in the Buffalo Classic along with the 9.3x74R.

IIRC, Eskimo's 375 Win was a 24" 223 Ultra originally, I think it was Ian(Haywire Haywood) that had it done by Wayne.

The 375 Win is good for 235gr at 2400fps when loaded in 38-55 brass, just the ticket for a 38-55 H&R and .379" jacketed bullets!!  ;D

I go through there the second two weekends in September on my way to West Bay WMA for the early opening season.  I also used to fly powered parachutes with Doug Miller and Tim LeBlanc if you know those guys.
