Another One (coyote) Bites the Dust
« on: October 07, 2010, 03:14:50 PM »
This is one of 3 I spotted while bow hunting for deer in my local hot spot. After seeing him the first time I decided to be prepared the next time I went to my blind, so I shouldered by 22-250 loaded with Hornady 50g VMax. While on stand nothing happened and I decided to head for home. As I approached a vantage point to overlook a clover field enroute to home I noticed a wet dark horizontal line just visible. Not knowing what it was I put my gun down and crawled with my bow for a better view. As I lifted my head I saw an animal with it's head down in the clover. I grabbed my range finder and it read 74 yards and then it lifted it's head, it wasn't a small deer but a coyote. Way out of bow range for me I crawled back to where I left my gun grabbed it and crawled back. When I looked over the edge it was gone, I looked up and it was running for the woodline 175 yards away. I took a knee and let the lead fly. I hit him as he crested the clocer field bowl and sent him butt over head. He laid there barking and flopping all over the place. I started towards him without putting a second shot in him, my mistake. He jumped up on three legs and went into the woods. The spot where I hit him was covered with blood in a 4 foot diameter circle and a real strong blood trail to the woods. About 30 minutes later I found him curled up in the fetal postion in a dry creek bed. The VMAX took out him rear right leg, broken in several places and massive bleeding. The next time I'll make sure I take the follow up shot immediately.
