Peep sight on Winchester 94 Trapper???
« on: October 08, 2010, 03:59:24 AM »
I have a Winchester 94 Trapper (16" barrel, 44 MAG, crossbolt safety, angle eject) that I love to shoot.  It's a handy and fun gun.  I am thinking about using this gun to deer hunt here in NH.  I have a nice hard cast load for my Trapper (that I also use in my Ruger revolver) that would be perfect for medium sized game.  Where I would hunt, there are lots of trees and hills, and most shots would be within 100 yards.  It would be rare for me to have the opportunity to harvest game beyond 100 yards.  I'd like to set up my Winchester 94 so that I can comfortable shoot decent groups (baseball or softballl sized) at 100 yards.

I am considering putting on a rear peep sight for my Trapper 94.  I found a Williams peep that can be installed using the two rear scope-mount holes on the receiver.

If I install the peep on my 94, what do I do about the existing rear sight on the gun?  Should I simply just drift the sight out and leave the dovetail slot empty?  I've seen metal blanks with a dovetail base installed on some guns with peep sights.  Where can I get one of these that would fit my 94's dovetail slot?

Also, my rear sight has a little ramp that is used to adjust the elevation of the buckhorn sight.  It looks like this little ramp is attached to the barrel.  How can I remove this from my barrel without damaging the gun?  Is this piece welded on to the barrel or is it just held in place by the tenstion of the buckhorn sight?

Finally (and most importantly), since the Winchester 94 is currently out of production, should I bother altering my gun?  I like the look of the buckhorn sights, but I know I'd shoot it much better at 100 yards with the peep.    I thought about putting a low power scope on it, but that seems even worse.

Drift out the rear sight and replace it with a Marble's slot blank.  The last Midway catalog had them for sale for less than 4 bucks.

+1 on what jlchucker said.  That's what I did with my 94.   ;)

But I am replacing that darn William's reciever sight with a Lyman 66.  The Lyman has click adjustments while you have to loosen screws and guess at how much to move the windage and elevation parts on the Williams.  A real pain if, like me, you play with handloads and cast bullets!   :D

Thanks fellas.

** EDITED ***
I just looked at the rear sight again and realized that the elevation ramp is connected to the sight and slides along the top of the barrel. For some reason (brain fart) I thought the ramp was connected to the barrel - oops.

I'll look into the Lyman sight.  I wasn't able to find a Lyman sight for the Angle Eject model Winchester (they were all top eject models that need the two holes on the side of the receiver installed).

AtlLaw - I just looked on the Williams Sights webpage.  I'm not sure which model peep you have, but if you get the Williams FP-94SE or FP094SETK sights, you have micrometer click adjustability and the TK model has target knobs so you can adjust the elevation and windage without a screwdriver.

FWIW, the ONLY bolt-on peeps that fit an angle-eject Winchester 94 are:
The XS peep
The Williams 5D-94AE
The Williams FP-94AE

The XS requires that the front sight be replaced with one taller than issue because it mounts the peep bar much higher than Williams, who carry ther peep bar behind the mounting base in the lowest position.

(Williams 5D-94AE, below)

Either Williams peep will zero using the issue front sight blade.

While a rear barrel dovetail slot filler blank can be purchased from MidwayUSA or Browmell's for about $6, one can also be easily made from the forward section of any old longleaf-type rear rifle sight.

Well DUH!   ::)  Never mind me...  :-\  I'm old.... :-[

See above!   :D  I thought about that after I posted!  Still rather have a Lyman though!   ;)

Not that it's the same style, but Skinner makes a barrel mount that would work, if you didn't want the big square rig on your gun.  This is one of the two I've narrowed down my choices to for my .45 Colt BC ;)

He doesn't appear to make a dedicated Winchester sight, though.
