New widow blakely
« on: October 08, 2010, 10:35:51 AM »
is a bad hobby when you have a friend, who when asked makes you things. Now what favour will I owe... and how much cash lol

New toy on the way. Hope to see it today

Due to my state laws has a max bore of 19mm and is just over 400mm long and 75mm round .... now if any one has an idea of a ball mould size :)

Owen.

19 mm = .748"; .748 * 39 / 40 = .729" (12 gauge.)  Lyman makes a .735" round ball mould which should be OK if you clean between shots.  A 1.5 ounce spherical sinker would be close, also.  Maybe you could use 12 gauge slugs?

Could you cheat on the 19mm with 19.49 mm?

It looks great, Owen. If we were making an analogy to the before and after photos used in weight loss ads, then of course your "Widow Blakely" model would represent the before picture. :D

Thanks guys :)

I can go a max of 10g or 19.8mm ..... might take it to 20 and hope they dont messure it to closley

And yep it is the "before" didnt like the profile of the "after" barrel and i had the plans for the "after" and found it lost around 24" so i scaled it up to suit.

See what kind of round ball moulds you can find, then decide how much bigger to make it.

3/4" ball bearing balls wouldnt be that difficult to find I guess , then make the bore 19,5 and you got both a good windage and a few tenths on the right side of the leagal border so it cant give you any problems at all .

you never know if some idiot cop would mic it to see if its leagal or not .
why break the law for a few tenths when you can use 3/4" ammo and be legal

You have to keep in mind when using ball bearings ,if it bounces at all down the barrel it will ruin the bore . I had to redo one of my cannons because steel shot beat the bore out. Ball bearings have a lot of advantages ,not the least of which is consistency. But you have to protect the bore . A good way would be to use sabots ;D

Patching a steel ball is just asking for problems.  You get a steel ball stuck you will pay the devil to get it out.

Of course this means you will need both.

C'mon, you know you want it. And the story isn't complete with just the "before" model.

It's your duty to pass on the historical knowledge. Do it for the children... :) :D ;D

You could pretty easily make a 3/4" round ball mould using a 3/4" ball nose end mill, among other things.

Nothing but rain for 2 weeks, our drought is over after 10 years. And going into Christmas time busy at work has slowed things down.

But found time to do a little bit of work on it.

Quick advice please. Im looking at how to set this off. Would percussion cap be ok and reach the charge? the wall thickness is 28mm or would fuse/slow match be better?

you got a very beautiful piece there
dont you think it would be difficult to have a percusion cap and hammer to fit to that size without being very dominant when looking at it ??

Thanks Dan, Im very happy how it is turning out. It was a worry that the hammer and cap would over power the look. Think ill stick with quills or fuse.
