Am I on the right track?
« on: October 09, 2010, 04:36:54 AM »
From chuck hawks on the Remington 20 ga. buckhammers.

The 20 gauge Buckhammer load has a MV of 1500 fps and ME of 2236 ft. lbs. The 100 yard figures are 995 fps and 1074 ft. lbs. Zeroed at 50 yards, the 1 ounce slug should hit 4.6" low at 100 yards.

So if I sight in plus 2" at 50 yards I should only be minus 2.6 inches at 100 yards?

Your trajectory will depend upon the initial zero that you see on the weapon.  The sighting process is based on line of sight, and will vary between individuals and weapons.  If you are planning not to shoot past 100 yards, I would set the zero for 100 yards.  Thus, at 50 yards you take a slight six o'clock hold and are still very much within the kill zone for your intended game.

Alleyyopper,
what are you hunting and what are the conditions?

I believe this has a huge impact on the set up.  Of example if your hunting deer from a stand and expect 100 yard shorts the zero is different than if your staling deer in brush or woods and expect 50 yard shots.

I'll be hunting deer and expect 25 yard shots from a raised stand in a woods with a view of 100yds or less. But expecting one thing and nothing else lead the American Navy a huge repair bill 12-7-41.

So if I sight in plus 2" at 50 yards I should only be minus 2.6 inches at 100 yards?

I sight my slug guns in at 50 yds and that give a pretty dead hold at 100yds.  I hunt smooth bore with rifled slugs and never have a bit of trouble.  Dont forget that your elevated stand will throw off your trejectory some.   Shoot from your stand and find the true drop otherwise you will be off target when it comes time to do it for real.

As I understand your post, you are saying the slug at 100 yards will drop 4.6" from a 50 yard zero. If you raise your elevation 2" at 50 that will raise it 4" at 100. Thus, if you sight 2" high at 50 you will be 0.6" low at 100, thus good to 125 or so. Zeroing dead center at 50 yards just wastes a lot of potential at longer ranges. Shooting 2" high at 50 yards will cause no problem at all but shooting  4.6" low at 100 sure can, especially when what you believe to be 100 turns out to actually be 125.

GEEZ just asked a question!!! Didn't say I wasn't going to shoot the gun to see what was the real deal. Really need to shoot it any way to see if it will even fire.

Now I think I would be afraid to post my findings, as the what is posted fourm cop would be all over me.

Sight it in 2.5 inches high at 50 yds and it should be right on at 100 yds but like everyone else said, go to the range and verify it.

You gotta calm down spanky the guy only asked a question.  Hell i havent even decided if i want to shoot remington sluggers or federal power shok.   I did resight today with the 870 using federals from 75yds it is now dead on.  At 50 i am about 3-4 inches high so i think im good to go and i will be out for the next month checking and rechecking until im satisfied.  This is how i do my prep.  Good luck to you alleyyooper i hope you get everything worked out and dont be shy about posting the result as i would love to hear them.  Are you using a rifled barrel by the way?  Ive been itching to try these through my smoothbore for a long time.  I know its not rifled but what the heck.

Yeah, you are on the right track, just the parabolic curve of trajectory requires different math to be correct, though your results wont be awful.
The old rule of thumb was that midrange trajectory (50yd. 'high' if going for 100) is about 1/4 the drop.
So, if the drop was 8" (muzzle to 100yd) your 50yd. would be about +2" (numbers used for example only).
Hope this helps, but you really have to verify any of this stuff with a shot or two to have confidence in your equipment.
