Hello everyone,
I have a few questions about reboring. I am considering a 35 Whelen rebore on a H&R handi rifle platform. For a donor barrel, I am considering a .223 Rem. There should be plenty of room to clean-up the bore, but I'm concerned about the chamber, specifically the length. The .223 Rem is much shorter than the Whelen. When the gunsmith rechambers the rifle, the chamber will have to be cut into the existing rifled part of the barrel (bore). Normally this wouldn't concern me, but I can't help but think there's a reason why the chamber area is always beefier and has a larger diameter. On a tapered barrel, the new chamber could certainly be inside of the tapered part of the barrel. Should I be concerned about this? Should I consider doing this project with a straight untapered heavy barrel?
Thanks, Dinny
