357 mag vs hog
« on: December 25, 2002, 03:07:29 AM »
I've seen good, one shot clean kills with .357 Magnum rifles... You are on to the key, wait on the shot, and get a good shot placement. Some may not agree with me on this, but I would go for a behind the shoulder shot. One thing for sure is DO NOT try a shoulder shot with it. The shoulder area on a big boar is just too tough for that round. Behind the shoulder in the heart lung area is good, and I know others are going to tell you to use an ear or brain shot... Be really careful though...

If'n you're talkin piglets, yup. If you're talkin REAL hogs, ones with attitudes, I'd think MORE than twice about it.

A wounded hog is a very dangerous animal.  Hell, they're dangerous when you just look at em!

I agree with dave, shot placement will allow a gun/cal to kill out of it's league.  But we have to have a reality check here.  The most accurate off the bench 357 could group in an inch at 50 meters.  Don't mean it's gonna in your hand in the field when the excitement gets high.  The group is more apt to be 10 inches!  Trust me on this, I know

I have seen times where a lousy inch would have made a difference.  Say you drop down just under the heart, that'll piss em off, bigtime!   An inch higher and he'd a run, but he'd a been a gone rooter.

In the hands of an accomplished gunner who is cool under fire, holds his shots until he's 200% sure, and can lay his lead where he wants it to go, the 357 COULD be adaquate.

It's NOT putting the odds in your favor.  The 44 mag is to me a sensible handgun for this task, and up from there.

Newbe, that depends entirely on your level of ability, confidence and good judgment... NOT BRAVADO.... Make no mistake about it, you will need to be up close for that shot, and it must be a good, well placed shot. If not, you have a dangerous animal on your hands, who in all likelihood will come after you. I personally would not, because of my physical limitations. I can't run, or even walk fast for that matter. In other words, I can't get myself out of a tight spot. I have modified my technique to include among other things, using trees strategically as I approach a bayed boar for a shot... and when I take that shot, I know EXACTLY where I am going to place that bullet... If you are a seasoned hunter, confident and above all, competent, I say have at it, with the understanding that the boar can be a formidable quarry... and one you don't want to make a bad shot on...

Listen to what dave is saying.  Him I wouldn't woory about if he was using a 22 lr handgun because he KNOWS when to and when NOT to, BIG difference that can only come with experience.

Sure, I stalk em, to within 10 yards and less with a measly Colt 45.  And I will also tell you straight, it's a RUSH!  And too, I have stained my shorts when it didn't go according to the plan

One thing you need to understand about hogs.  You can kill them with some very small stuff IF you hit them right with the first shot.  IF you don't hit them right with the first shot you are going to be amazed at how much lead they can abosorb before going down.  In my humble opinion if you feel you need the 12 ga as a backup, then you ought to forget the 357 Magnum.   :-)

This was sent to me a couple of days ago. Long but talks about the 357 and a big hog.

6-22-03 Brothers bring down 870-pound feral hog

By Matt Williams, Outdoors Writer

You're apt to see some strange things while traveling a busy highway. But the last thing 26-year old Candi Smith of Liberty City, Texas expected to see browsing along the fringes of Interstate 20 last Friday morning was an 870 feral hog.
Smith, six months pregnant and carting her 2-year-old son in a stroller, was taking a stroll down the highway service road when she spotted the big porker milling around in a pasture, about 200 yards from the roadside.
"My mother was with me, but neither of us knew what it was at first," recalled Smith. "At first, we thought it was a cow, because it was so big.
“Then it started to move closer. That's when we decided it was a big hog."
The women continued their walk, but not for long. It turned into a run once they noticed the hog was taking about 10 steps to their two.
"When it started trotting toward us, we took off running back to our house," Smith said. "It probably got 75 yards from us. I don't know if it was actually coming after us or not. But we weren't sticking around to find out. It was pretty crazy, running down the road, six months pregnant and pushing a stroller."
Smith went door-to-door knocking and called just about everyone she knew in hopes of finding someone to dispose of the hog. But she didn't have much luck. It was mid-morning and everyone was at work.
All was quiet around the Smith household until the following morning, when Corey Smith, Candi's 23-year old brother in-law, rolled into their driveway about 6 a.m. and saw the black/white giant standing in the middle of their three-acre pasture.
"It was huge," Corey said. "I'm six feet tall and I could tell by looking that it was at least 800 pounds. At its back, the hog stood taller than my waist."
Corey grabbed his .357 caliber rifle and stalked within 30 yards of the big hog before it tried to flee. He shot the animal four times in the shoulder, but the animal never showed any signs of being hit.
"It didn't phase him a bit," he said. "It just trotted off like it hadn't been hit. I couldn't believe it."
Rather than going after the hog by himself, Corey went back to get help from his older brother, Jeff. The two men trailed the hog into a patch of woods and eventually spotted it standing in the brush.
"It was still standing on all fours, like it wasn't hurt at all," Corey said. "Then it just took off running. We chased it for about 300 yards before we were finally able to put it down. It took four more shots to kill it."
The Smith's used a tractor to drag the hog home and roll it onto a flatbed trailer. Then they took it to Weatherford, Inc. in Kilgore and weighed it on scales used for torquing oil field tools.
Amazingly, the boar hog weighed in at a whopping 870 pounds! It measured seven feet, four inches from the tip of its nose to its hip, and five inches across the bridge of its snout.
Hogs that large aren't much good for tablefare; the meat is foul and way too tough.
But its 100-pound head - accented by three-inch tusks - has the makings for an interesting mount and lifetime of campfire tales.
The Smith brothers probably aren't the only ones with a good story to tell about the big pig, either.
The taxidermist who is mounting the head made an interesting discovery as he removed the skin for curing.
"He said buckshot pellets - 27 of them - fell out everywhere," Corey said. "Somebody else had shot the hog right in the face with a shotgun loaded with buckshot and we didn't even notice, because it was completely healed up. That was one tough hog."
Smith said the taxidermist is having a tough time finding a Styrofoam form to fit the massive cape.

yikes!
I would love to come up on that sucker with some hard casts loaded purty hot and spit at him with my 454... I think I could do it in less than eight! This just goes to show you... what if you run accross this hoss????? you don't want a 357... it only holds about 6 rounds! it took eight! I would stick with pumping the hell out of that mossberg instead of pulling out the 357 for a follow up on a big boy.

looking  through  my notes  i have  killed 4  hogs  with  a  ruger blackhawkpistol  I  always  used  PMC 158 gr jsp   the farthest  shot was  around  27  yards,  and   it  was  hard  to  hold  the  pistol  steady  enough   for  a  shot  on  a  100 lb  hog     only  1  hog  fell  in  his  tracks  the  other  3   i had  to  trail   not  much  blood trail  a dab  here  and  there  that  is  it  i agree  with  the other  posters It  will  work if  you limit  your range  to  where  you shoot  accurately  stay  off  the shoulder  and  be  prepared  for a  follow  up shot    the  hogs  i  hunt  are  i  thick  rough  nasty terrain  and i is best  to  make  the first  shot count

Use a hot loaded 180 or 200 gr hard cast load and aim for the head. keep your shots within 25 yards and it will work. Hogs have big heads and it makes a great target.

357mag with a 180 or 200 gr hard cast load makes a good head shot killer load. You will not have to be concerned with penatration. It will !

I will be using the 200 gr hard cast loads on my next hog hunt out of a revolver.

Willis5 gots a scary but true point!i read a story about thsi guy coming down to florida area err soemthin and his huntin dogs got loose and this real big guy found em and tied em up. finaly the owner got a call and he went right over to get them and struck a conversation with the big guy and the bigun was from NY and talked about bear hunting and stuff and said he never hog hutned and would love to and so the owner invited him for the next weekend to go with him. all through the week the big guy kept callin and got more and more excited tillt he weekend when they met at the resort err somethin. the owner found that he didnt bring a rifle and said where is your gun and the guy thought he might would supply him with one but there was only 1 rifle for the owner and a 357 magnum for side arm so the big guy why dont you let me use your 357 and so he did. eventualy the dogs got a big ole hog cornerd in a swampy area and when they came up the hog ran strait for the big man and he drew and shot him in the chest and the hog didnt even flinch and knocked em to the ground and kept borrin him between the legs!!!! i fergot the rest of the story but in he end the guy passed out and got sent to the hospital and had a testical removed, the hog died from bloodloss, and some of the dogs died! thats enough to make some not ven think about hog hunting. but it makes me more aware and careful just becasue i learned from someone elses mistake.

It's all shot placement! Moved to Texas two years ago. heard all the stories about "mad" hogs after being shot. Bought property and have shot all my hogs between the eyes or in the ear....... don't want to go looking for one in the heavy brush. I would shoot one with a .357 if I were shooting 50 yards or under, over that I would want someone backing me up just to be on the safe side, like I said, I've heard a lot of wild pig stories!

If i was hunting with dogs i would go with a 44 cal on up.If i was new to hog hunting i would go with 44 cal on up.If you have hunted hogs a long tme and know how to hunt then the 357 is plenty of gun.I have heard many bad stories about hog hunts and seen a few bad things myself. All of the bad ones i saw were hunting with dogs and a cornerd hog everyone in plain sight.Have had a few run over me becouse i was setting in there exit trail. All the hogs i have hunted stalking or lying in wait never knew were i was or that i was even there. If you are hidden and take a shot the hog is not going to stop and search the area to attack you.If you pop out from behind a tree in front of the hog and shoot yes he may attack you.Bottom line if you are stalking hogs and you shoot one and he attacks you.Well next time get a bigger gun. better yet go and practice you'r hunting skills. When the 357 came out it was a wonder cartridge it was the best hog gun ever made. Then the 44mag came out and the 357 was not quiet enough gun. Then the 454 came out and the 44 is marginal.I wonder if the 357 has really lost its power or have we lost our hunting powers.I'am sure when the bow came out someone said you cant kill a hog with a spear anymore.
Without Plumbers there would be alot more crap in the world

It is not a question of "Will a 357 kill a hog with the correct shot placement?" We know it will, but I want the extra insurance that a more powerfull gun will give me. The quicker it dies, the better. If my 454 will do the job that I want it to do out to 75 yds. (my limit not the gun's)...then I would not go with a smaller round for more of a challenge or something.
If you are hell bent on using a 357, take the advice in the previous posts and keep the shots close. If you get a chance to bust a big boy with the 357, be careful and good luck with your shot.  :D

some of the things I see some peaple do wrong is they use to heavy of a bullet and it does not even open up. last year there was a group that come in with all 454 cas. they had heavy bullets they were amazed that the hogs sucked them up and most of them we got next day..plus it all depends on the life and situation of the animals some are extemely tuff and some I believe 22 mag would be enough ..  the best round I seen on hogs so far is out of muzzle loader (barnes bullet) a head shot is not my choice shot.. big but hard shot. unless what happen to redhawk44 he had no choice.......not looking to argue but this is fun still waiting on the one when I was young I got one with a sling shot at 87 paces and it was a 177 cal. bb dropped like a rock lol.....

That would be an interesting story... lucky he wasn't one of those really big mean S.O.B's :-D  he might have had you in a tree!

I am sold on my 454 with 260gr partitions. it has done exactly what I wanted it to do on hogs and deer.
i it fails, I am going out with a 4 leaf clover, a horseshoe, a rabbit's foot and a slingshot. :)  You are brave to attack one with anything less ha!
