240gr cast swc
« on: October 10, 2010, 02:04:58 PM »
So this is probably a dumb question but is there anything wrong with a plain ole' 240gr like an oregon trail in a sabot?
Seems to be a real cheap alterantive for someone who doesn't cast their own. They kill everything outta the 44mag at 1200FPS
so they should do the same at 1700ishFPS right? Or am I missing something, haven't even got the gun yet but I'm already
worrying about what to shoot outta it.
I just can't see buying a $1 a piece bullet when I have a 5gal bucket of 240gr SWC sitting here that have done all I have ever asked for.
Way off the mark? Or am I not reading enough shooting and blasting magazines?

I shot & killed a deer a few years ago with just such a bullet, 240 grn home cast semi wadcutter held in a Hornady green(44 cal) sabot. I put it right in the boiler room at about 20 yrds & the deer went less than 20 yrds. I have also used a cast conical in the same manner. Another way I use them is getting a scope close, or just general shooting. I now mostly use SSTs for hunting but still have a use for the cheaper stuff.

I tried shooting 300 grain wadcutters out of my Knight rifle and they shot great.

TC makes (or made) a round called "Cheap Shot" it was nothing more than a lead cast hp bullet in a sabot they claim (and I agree) they shot the same as the jacked HP XTP's but, you got twice as many for the same price. They kill deer just as good, never had a deer I killed say other wise.

Just ordered a box of 20 to try. If they shoot as good as the shockwaves I am shooting now, I will buy a case and call it done. I hope they shoot.
