I can just hear the call for fire now:

Redleg 18 this is Redleg 24, fire mission, over.

24 this is 18, fire mission, out.

18 this is 24, Request canister of golf-balls, battery 2 rounds at my command, over.

24 this is 18, Say WHAT?  Over....

Ooooookay.

Nice, but we need to see more mortar and less cover.

And why are the balls pink with numbers on them?

Our ACWSA shoot at Richmond this weekend was a fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.  There were 80 pink numbered golf balls and one yellow golf ball in each "canister".   We sold each ball of $2.  After firing them (one on Saturday and one Sunday) we awarded 50% to the person who had the ball closest to the yellow ball.  Then the kids had fun Easter hunting the rest of the balls which they kept.  Everyone thought this was a great event.  We raised $160 from this event alone.  I didn't get any photos as I was working the mortar, but my son did.  I will see what he has that I can post.

Thanks for the pic, Norm; I like the way the highlighted muzzle markings look.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

You get a little idea of how a stone mortar worked.

I've been thinking about cleaning out the back yard of chestnuts and walnuts.   ;D

Golf balls roasting in the smoke and fire
Spotters watching where they go
Dimpled balls being spat from a pyre
Just as they were so long ago

Everybody knows some GOEX and some green Visco
Help to make a gray sky bright
Tiny tots marvel at the show
Of golf balls racing out of sight

They know that GBO is on their way
They've loaded lots of guns and mortars on their sleigh
And every cannoneer is gonna spy
To see if concrete really knows how to fly

And so I'm offering this little song
With a dash of sulfur and some coal
We'll all sing out, as we have all along
FIRE IN THE HOLE!!!
