Bolt Action - American Made

You guys gave me some good advice on another thread so I thought I would ask another question.

What bolt guns out there are American made?  This is important to me and some research has shown me Ruger, Remington, Mossberg and Kimber.  Are there any others and are these four all accurate and reliable?

I wouldn't keep a Mossberg if one was given to me.

Savage is perhaps the most accurate out of the box rifle.  Stevens  is made by Savage - same basic parts just fewer frills.

Marlin is making excellent bolt rifles as well.

T/C Icon and T/C Venture are both American made....both have an accuracy guarantee as well.

I have three Ruger bolt action Center fire rifles.  All are accurate and reliable
I have two Rmington 700 and both are great.
I have one Winchester 70 and it too is a great rifle.
So far all have killed thing and do the job they were purchased for.
Calibers range from 22 Hornet to 338 Win mag.
A Kimber 8400 montana is on my wish list.

Don't over look Cooper, or Rigby (Rogue River Rifle in Paso Robles CA bought the Rigby name) if you are looking for a higher end custom or semi custom rifle.

Indeed.  If I had my pick of REASONABLY priced rifles (which to me means nothing over $1k), the T/C Icon would be what I got.  Still don't own one myself, but having fiddled with them in the stores and just looking at the product literature, I definitely want one.

As to the others on the list, you really can't go wrong with the Savage.  Deadly accurate and built very nice (the plastic trigger guard is the only thing I don't like  - that said, I got a metal one for my Savage for less than $10).

For American-made bolt guns I've also got 2 Winchesters - a 670 and a 70 (.225 Win and .270 Win), both of which are nice too.  They cycle smoother than the Savage and the stocks are shaped better (as much as I love my Savage the stock feels a bit wide), but neither is as accurate.

The Weatherby Mark V is American made. Originally made in Germany, then Japan, production was moved to the US in the 90s

Weatherby, Inc. is an American gun manufacturer.  Company headquarters is in the northern San Luis Obispo County town of Paso Robles, California. The Mark V barreled action is manufactured by ATEK in Brainerd, MN while the barrel and action for the Vanguard are still manufactured by Howa in Japan. Final assembly of the Mark V and Vanguard is performed at Weatherby's company headquarters in Paso Robles. Current production Weatherby shotguns (the "D'Italia" line) are made in Italy through a collaborative effort with Italian gunmaker Fausti Stefano.

A question for you Mulehell,

            Is the barrel floated on those MkV's?  or does it have the fore stock pressure bedding point?

        I recall reading an artical on the MkV's production move to the US. Possibly in Gun Digest but then again it's probably in one of the five US magazines I brought back from the US in 2003. Nice group by the way  ;D.

It has a pressure point, the only factory floated Weatherby is the Accumark. The first group with my rifle went 3/4" with Weatherby loads. The load above is a 168 TSX at 3315 FPS, I've shot it to 500 yards and should cause elk serious problems.

Some do some don't, rifles are individuals. All of the new Model 70s are bedded and floated from the factory.

The FNs are consistently sub-MOA out of the box.  That's Remington accurate.  I'm glad they've reached that goal.

The Model 70 has always been accurate, I've had and still have several. Remington accurate may have been true 25 years ago but its a crapshoot out of the box these days. I would go into any 700 purchase ready to have to float and bed it.

Hmmmm thank you again Mulehell, that was an interesting read  ;D.

I suspect the problems with stocks moving and that fore stock screw came about when they introduced the new super dooper Kiln dried wood  ::).

I nearly brought a 30-06 post 64 Model 70 then I recalled the dubious reloading practices of the former owner so backed out. Shame as it was a nice rifle and seemed to shoot quite well.

I do love my Model 70 30-06.  Mine is a very accurate work horse, and shoots Hornady 180 grain Interlocks at .75" all day.  Besides, I find this gun's lines pleasing to the eye.  What is not to like about the Winchester Model 70?  I would buy another in a heart beat.
