Any better way to put up rat glands other than salting, or preserving in alcohol? Any suggestions on what to do with them after that? I hear everyone talking about what a great lure ingredient they are, but have never actualy taken the time to save any, but would like to this year.

All of the rat glands i've got from trappers over the years were either salted or frozen.  Salting them with pickling salt does not harm them as a lure ingredient so don't worry about that.  Ace

Asa, In your mind.
1-What is the best way to store rat glands from year to year?
I heard that if you dont freeze them the smell will go away.

2-Is tinctureing them a good idea?

3- What way would you tincture them?

Newt:
You are correct, many types of glands lose their odor over time when stored but it takes a considerable amount of time.  Mink glands do this too as well as rat glands.  Freezing them while stored is I believe the best method.  Tinctured odors seem to last quite well when tinctured in either alcolhol or propylene glycol.   Most of the rat glands I use go into rat lure and the special waterproof base I use in the lure also keeps the musk odor strong and sweet for may years.  Ace
