44 mag in a Redhawk hog load?
« on: October 12, 2010, 05:05:19 AM »
Any of you shoot hogs with a 44 mag pistol? I will be carrying a 6.5 -7 ish (never measured) inch barrel Redhawk, I have a bunch of 240 gr jacketed soft point mag tech bullets. What load range would be good for close in work on hogs? I hope to do all long shots with other guns but for tracking or close in work thought this would be better. (especially since Handi rifles don't reload so quick). I have 250 gr cast bullets as well but figured the jacketed may work better.... Pipe up if you disagree and tell me what you know. I appreciate any input from you guys with experience. The only hogs I see up here in MN is at the county fair.  Thanks  thejanitor

Yes sir, but I generally use a factory 240gr SP.  I handloaded for it in the past, but not any longer. I generally use PMC, but bought a box of Magtec 240's and am looking forward at some point in trying those out.  Have used plain white box Winchester 240 gr SP's as well.  They seem to perform about the same.

Either bullet should work fine.   I have used 240 gr jsps and cast bullets in my sb2 handi-rifle.   kills em dead, too. nowadays, i use my mossy 500 slugster with hardcast slugs.  The larger bullets I use kills 'em dead quicker with two very large holes, all for less than 45 cents a load.

I have the same pistol as you.I havent shot any game with it yet,but I can tell you that of all the different loads i have shot thru it,the leverevolution hornadys are by far the most accurate and consistant
