Chillian miners
« on: October 12, 2010, 06:35:16 PM »
Just watched the first of the 33 miners come up. Man I cried like a baby. Worked 26 yeats underground in Louisiana salt mine. Only 1200 feet but know the feeling of those familys. As an old miner I know that feeling of hitting the top. GOD BLESS THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES!!! Rode a two man rescue bullet like the one man used when government was storing oil. Scarry but had a friend with me each time. Must have been a long ride up . It must have took a whole roasery of prayers. Saint Barbara is the Catholic patron saint of miners. I hope she is praying for them also. Enough of my rammbling. Good nite to all and pray for the others who are underground.

Quote
Miners videotaping the drill breaking through a chamber's ceiling 2,041 feet underground could be seen cheering joyfully and hugging each other, the drillers said. At the surface, the rescuers chanted, danced and sprayed champagne so excitedly that some of their hard hats tumbled off.

I watched the first one emerge too, what a great feeling. Prayers answered for sure. What I don't understand is why it was so hot down there, they said the temp stayed 90 deg. Caves are a constant 54-56 deg. Was it the extreme depth??? Enlighten me please. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

n't spell to good but bear with me. Most mines have forced air flow. With air just from gravity not forced flow it is like working in an attic. There is air but it is not moving or comming directly from above in a fast flow. I hope this will help to understand. In a salt mine the roofs are either 30 feet up to 100 feet above floor where they are the roof is much lower. Old shooter Hi from cajun (censored word). Some of your kin probably worked in the salt mines or you knew of some. GOD PROTECT THEM ALL!!

High temperature is very common in gold and silver mines. The metallic elements are brought up via hydrothermal action in an aqeous solution. Geothermal/volcanic activity is at play and increased depth gets you closer to the action.

In South Africa temps of 160 degrees have been registered, the Comstock mines of Nevada reached 140 degrees. At 85-90 degrees organ damage starts to occur as the body has no mechanism for cooling. The dew point underground is generally equal to ambient temperature so persperation does little to cool the body.

Hope this explains a bit about underground mines.

The rescue of the miners was a great technical achievement.  The world wide interest in this story reminds me of the early days of America's manned space program when people were transfixed by TV coverage of launches of American astronauts into space.

Powderman, from what I read, the deeper you go, the hotter it gets after a certain depth.  Center of the earth is molten lava.  Crust on top floats on this.  Water pools on this crust to form the oceans.  Amazing balance.  God knew what he was doing when He created the earth for man to live on.

Man, like if it weren't for the extreme danger and only having a few smokes a day, it would be really cool to be trapped with my buddies in a mine away from my wife and kids for a couple of months, dude.

I hear they all lost weight and are collaborating on a book about the "Chilean Miner Diet."

There are other places I could think of that would fit the need to escape the home much better.
