Lure holders/ backing
« on: December 08, 2003, 09:24:42 AM »
I made a dirthole set the other day and as I was luring it I noticed a chunk of semi-decomposed wood.  It was about as big as your forearm.  Anyway, I slid it under the grass like it had been there a while behind the hole and smeared a little lure on it with a stick and then threw the stick/lure combo down the hole.  I gave the wood a shot of R-fox urine and was on my way.  This morning i get to the hole and there is a dog print (not coyote) 2 inches from the pan and the wood was gone!!  That rotten dog stole my backing!
Ever had that happen before??

Yep over the years depending on what im using if backing isnt big enough  or stuck in ground  a yote ect  will carry it off to chew, sniff, maybe roll on it..... If you look around you might find it  25 yards or so  in any direction.  If you find it  make a urine post set nearby  using something that is solid  and blend set in as yote ect will come back and check out stick he took...... but as you said  in yr case it was a dog but advice still stands as its a canine trait.

Canines will definitely many times run off with a scent stick if a foot/pan connection isn't made.  Like RdFx said, some eat the stick, some dissapear completely with the stick and some drop it anywhere from 1 foot to 25 feet away from the set. Ace :-)

The other day I made a walkthrough set and used a stick as my lure holder. I put some Cachottier on the stick and the next morning it was gone. I guess a canine approached it from behind, grabbed the smelly stick, and went and sniffed of it the rest of the night. I hope he had a good time!

Then dirty theiven K9s :x   If a fellow drives his backing / lure holder into the ground he will get more of them pesky devils.  The "T-bone" vertabra of cattle and sheep work very nicely...drive the long part of the "T" into the ground.
