Night firing BB Mortar
« on: October 13, 2010, 07:21:15 PM »
and the Golf ball mortar .
Wow, what fun !
A couple of hunter friends  stopped by with a supply of glow sticks , and clear golf balls with glow sticks.

We set the golf ball mortar to about a 70 degree angle and loaded 2 golf balls with glow sticks with a 50 gr. Charge .  The balls went up about 40 yards and out about 40 yards , Really neat . We tried a couple more rounds like that and moved on to the bowling ball mortar.
2 oz charge 60 degree angle  , put the glow sticks in the finger holes wedged with the glow stick wrapper.
We had red and green glow sticks . Looked like a plane passing with its running lights flashing !
Tried 3 green sticks , real nice display .
Had to try one stick wedged and poured cut open glow fluid in the other 2 holes .
The ball left a trail of fluid looking like northern lights .
Next we stuffed all holes with glow sticks and poured the contents of 2 glow sticks over the ball just before launchng . Ball glowed wile the  rotating sticks looked like a UFO flying out there.
Lots of fun .
Balls are easy to find as the glow sticks stay with the ball.
I saved a few sticks to play with @ another date .  Lots of night fun.

Sorry , no pictures >:(

Now when you try to explain that the UFO they saw last night was a BB with glow sticks in the finger holes ,they will look at you stranger then if you had just left it at a UFO.  ::)

Every time I see "BB Mortar" I get a mental picture of a tiny little thing with a .178 inc bore.  I guess you could sand down one granule of cannon grade powder to load it.

Ernie,
While you did a fine job of describing that evening's fun, there are occasions when the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words" really rings true, and dang it this was one of them! :P
Hey, your pal Douglas must have a pocketful of cash from 'bringing in the sheaves'; tell him your birthday's coming up. :D
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

This is about 1/2 pound of Cannon behind a 16 pounder (good for about 1000 yards.)

Joe,

There is BB and there is bb.

And BB is the shot size.  So...bb would  be bowing ball?

Must disagree ex 49 I would think BB is BB like TT in duck and goose shot . This means bb would be bowling ball .

Having said that ,I can almost garrentee(sp) it's the other way round . ;)

No, you were right, which is what causes my odd initial mental image. OK, just part of it...being kind of warped myself must have something to do with it too.  I also get weird things going through my head when I see Greek or Cyrillic characters in words that are otherwise in the Roman alphabet.

Quote
Birdshot
12 gauge birdshot shotgun shell.

Birdshot sizes are numbered similar to the shotgun gauges; the smaller the number, the larger the shot. Generally birdshot is just called "shot", such as "number 9 shot" or "BB shot". A useful method for remembering the diameter of numbered birdshot is simply to subtract the shot size from 17. The resulting answer is the diameter of the shot in hundredths of an inch. For example, number 2 shot gives 17-2 = 15, meaning that the diameter of number 2 shot is 15/100 or 0.15". B shot is .170 inches, and sizes go up in .01 increments for BB and BBB or Pellets.
