How pastor rolls...
« on: October 13, 2010, 11:19:57 PM »
A friend of mine, good man I've worked beside daily for the past eighteen years, told me about his pastor's sermon this past Sunday...

All about the shiney new Bentley The Lord had handed him the keys to, and how you too might could get one if you've got enough faith and "plant your seeds in the right soil" (give money to my church).

From what I hear, you also have to "always be right with God so as not to be denied your abundance" (not having missed a tithe when your numbers come up in the holy lottery). You must give in order to receive, you see. Sounds more like investing than giving.

Gotta hand it to him; pastor does practice what he preaches on receiving. His collection agency..... er, "elders" call, text and email to announce special offerings on his birthday, his Wife's, their aniversary, etc. I didn't ask my friend if they had one for Columbus day. He says they pass the plate at every Bible study or other minor church function. They also have what they call an "impact" offering one weekend per month where everyone is encouraged to dig deeper. Members get to wave their cash and shout the dollar amount as they come up to the front of the church to be fleeced.

Like always, I told my bud he's a sucker for giving cash to a money-grubber who calls himself a pastor. He actually agreed with me (1st time) and is now thinking about looking for another church. I guess maybe I finally made a dent in him after almost two decades of bending his ear about wolves and sheepskins.

A quick google for my friend's church also revealed that a Bentley is the new status symbol for the black mega-church pastor...

I've never felt that the "mega-churches" are all that great.  I won't attend one.  I don't feel that a pastor should be poor to show with devotion and service.  In fact, if a pastor exercises good stewardship and leadership of his congregation and that congregation is able to support it, I do believe that a pastor should be fairly well compensated.  One of my best friend's is a pastor.  I've seen the point in his life where he literally budgeted EVERY dime.  When he would go to eat with his family and they would drink water because it was free.  At times I have done what was in my power to help him and his family.  Now, he is pastoring a much larger church than before but it still isn't financially all that good.  They are still having problems with the church finances.  However the parsonage is a very nice house.  He actually has upgraded to a used Toyota Camry and has a jon boat for fishing.  I hope his flock grows and is able to provide for him and his family.  I've also known some of the new age believers who believe in the "give to receive" mentality.  While I do believe that God rewards faithfulness, service and tithing; I don't believe that your rewards are necessarily given in this life.  Some yes, but the greater reward is waiting in Heaven.  Many a faithful servant has lived hand-to-mouth on this earth.  Their blessings will come later.  Many a faithful servant has been blessed financially in this life and they will also be rewarded in heaven.  I do have problem with those who give and serve in order to try to recieve blessings in this life.  Tithing, giving and service should all be done selflessly and without expectation of reward.  Anything else is not Biblical.

fergit a Bentley... if I'm going to get blessed with a new car, make it a 2011 5.0 Mustang.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.
