Advance Pop Open Help

I have a H and R Handi Rifle in .243 that is doing the pop open thing.  I have read the FAQs and Handi Rifle Basics.  It did have oil on the shelf.  I have taken it down and removed all noticible lubricant.  Anything else I can do?

I am closing the action with authority fwiw.

Welcome! Factory or handloads? If factory, it may need to go back to H&R for repair, you need to make sure the round is flush with the chamber face so the action will fully lock up, it's a common problem with handloads that aren't resized properly, but it could be a chamber issue, insufficient latch engagement or an ammo problem.

Factory Loads Winchester 100 gr power points.

I just recleaned the insides and found some more oil....I have no idea where it's coming from.
My son hunted last year with this rifle with no problems.  After the season was over I did clean and oil it before putting it in the gun safe.
I guess I may have oiled in the wrong places.

I store mine muzzle down because oil will run down from anywhere above, the latch and shelf can end up with oil on them, it can come from the ejector/extractor too, I use a dry lube there like Elmer's Slide All or Hornady One Shot. Storing them muzzle down also prevents a wood stock from being oil soaked as well as protecting recoil pads, lots of old timers know this trick.

Gun season opens saturday and my son would be heartbroken if he couldnt tote his rifle.

Pop the barrel off and spray it with carb cleaner, brakeclean or such (outdoors with eye protection please) down in the mounting lug/ejector area, let it drip dry a while, then start over with the 'lube'.
Wet a Q-Tip with the same and get the latch real clean, and spiff up the breech face abd barrel breech.
You may want to clean the hinge pin and its mate on the underlug and put only a thin lube film on that too.
Should be as good as always after that.
