I do not think there is a most accurate semi-automatic .22 rifle for under $250.00. I think accuracy would mean, what each gun owner subjectively thinks .22 rifle accuracy is...

If I only had $250.00 to spend, I would get a Ruger 10/22 and have fun accessorizing it over time. You CAN spend a bunch of money doing that. The Ruger 10/22 is probably the most reliable, and most widely purchased, .22 semi-automatic to be bought at this time.

A lot of people like the Marlin semi-automatic .22 rifles. I don't...! However, I love Marlin's lever guns to death.

I have had ~~cheap~~ inexpensive .22 rifles in the past, and all have been a great disappointment to me. I have enough .22 rifles now, to fill a large sized safe. They are single shot rifles, bolt action rifles, pump action rifles, lever guns and semi-automatics.

The best, and most accurate, semi-automatics I have, are my two Winchester Model 63's that were put out by Winchester/Miroku a while back. I promise can you this, they cost a bunch more than $250.00...!

I would surmise, in the long run, that what a person buys, is probably what level of quality they are lookng for. I spend a bunch of money on firearms. However, I am looking for the best quality I can get.

Well, I'd have to say I am in the other camp. I purchased a Marlin Model 60 used in 1986 and it's still going strong and accurate after 24 years. I have outshot every buddy's 10-22, Remington etc.

You typically have to pay for an after market barrel and trigger for the 10-22 to get the kind of accuracy I get from my stock 60. I'm not bashing your choice, but simply stating my experience. It's a solid proven performer in my book. I've considered buying a new one to compare, but every time I think about it I come back to Why?

I was thinking about getting a 10-22, or a Marlin. I think I'm going with a 10-22 and get a aftermarket barrel and stock. (Yeah, I know it will be more than 250.00)

There are a lot of options, but who makes a good barrel and good lookin wood stock? Can I get both from the same company?

There are so many aftermarket part suppliers for 10-22's you can get stuff about anywhere, which is the biggest plus.

Adding triggers too in case you want to really accurize it.

The Volquartsen brand is considered the premier I believe. I also saw Fajen stocks and other big names in these links.

Most of the .22's shoot so well that the old rule of thumb still applies, If you have $100 to spend on a .22, $50 should be used to buy a scope.

Remington, Marlin, Browning or Ruger---Ruger being the last choice---from a pawn shop or at a gun show, from an individual.

I believe the point of the adage was that one should spend at least the same amount on the scope as monies spent for the .22 cal rifle.

Swampman got his M60 for $199 so by rights, it should wear a (todays price) Bushnell Elite 3200 series scope which cost $199

Seems like a good scope could used to be had for half the price of a .22 and they preformed well considering the trajectory of the rimfire. Many scopes used to cost less than half the firearm price and worked so well that the hunters continued to buy and kept those manufactures in buisness. Quality existed back then of course but was more reserved for the 100yd shooter instead of the kid who was reliably taking squirrels at 50yds and under with an $8 scope on a $30 semi-auto rifle.

IMO the Bushnell 1.5-4.5X32 and the Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32 are better than anything you could buy 20 years ago.

Mueller also has very nice scopes for the price. I would agree on a model 60. I have a tweaked 10/22, but I have lots of $$$$$ in it.

I recently traded my old bow for a brand new Savage model 64. It averages about $140 new. This little .22 will outshoot anything short of a target grade .22. It has the accuracy of the vintage .22's when quallity meant something. I mounted a Center Point AR22 3 x 9 x 32 rimfire scope on it and my son shot five 10 round clips, slow and rapid fire at 50 yards, and you could cover all shots with a quarter using Federal shells and with no misfeeds nor flyers at all. Savage may not be pricey but they sure make a good gun.

The three bottom shots outside the dot, and the one bottom edge of dot, were zeroing the scope in. I drew the dot by tracing around a quarter.

I agree with you on the scope, with the exception of early squirrel season. The scope on mine normally resides on my .22 bolt, but when there is so much cover in the way of leaves, I find the scope helps me pick up on the motion of squirrels when they are barking. Once the leaves fall, the scope goes back to my bolt and the semi-auto becomes my iron sighted rabbit gun.

I resisted scopes for a long time but they become apreciated when you get older and your eyesight becomes less than desired. I simply can't focus on both iron sights together.

As far as " One shot...one kill." that's something Swamp and I can agree on. My all time favorite rifle is my T/C .270. My son has come to love single shots too and bought himself a CVA Optima Elite with both a .243 barrel and a .50 muzzleloader barrel.

Not much for me they don't. I can see the back sight ok but the front's a blur, however I do have a set on a 9mm pistol that for some reason I can see quite good with. Probably because of the much shorter sight picture.

I did, two gunsmiths did, and Marlin did three times and it still was not reliable. I gave it away and got 10-22s and have never looked back. I envy you guys who had good luck with yours. Mine must have been one made on Monday after a three day weekend...

Just curious, what shells were you using. I've personaly never had a Marlin I liked but I almost gave away a nice, perfectly good Winchester .22 because of feeding problems. Know what was wrong? Remington .22's! I haven't bought any since and I've talked to hundreds of people that feel the same way. Remington has a serious quallity control problem with their .22's. A few out of a 50 round box might go bang but more than half just went pop!

That was the procedure for my old Marlin Glenfield and had to do it at least every hundred shots if I wanted it to work.

Fast forward 30yrs and the Model 60 I bought for my son is free of these problems. I do not have it on hand to inspect right now but I think the feed ramp design was improved.

TM7-If you are liking the fun pop pop pop aspect of the semi-auto, Please google Bump Fire.
I ran into the U-Tube Bump Fire video just last week on an unrelated search. I did not believe it at first but after watching the "how to", I can understand how it does work.

Bump Fire is IMO totally worthless but may make for an impressive demonstration for friends. I might give it a try myself.

I did not believe this (at first) but there is many more.

What is happening is that the shooter has put the thumb on his right hand through a belt loop and then is using a very light pressure with the open left hand on the forearm to make the recoil operate the semi-auto
If you are good, a semi-auto pistol can be used.

You might be able to do this to give a friend a "shock" at the range but I also like to hit what I am aiming at.

I got my 10/22 for $150.00 on sale a few years ago. I was going to put a several modification on it, but end up only a Simmons power scope. The only complain I have had is not enough time to shoot it more. I've been using Remington Cbees in it as a bolt gun. Kind of a repeating pellet gun. I think Remington used to make a realy nice adult sized .22 semi, but haven't seen one for sale in a long time.

I have the Remington 597, and love it. Very accurate, and has a full sized stock. It doesn't have all of the aftermarket accessories of a 10/22, but if I had wanted that kind of stuff, I would have gotten an AR.

Here is a pic, 10 shots at 100 yards. I was using CCI Minimags, but the cartridge in the pic for reference is a Remington Golden Bullet from a bulk box.

If you look at Remingtons, don't waste your time with the target barrels... unless things have changed recently, they are less accurate than the regular barrel.

I have a 10/22 "walmart special" - this is a full size walnut stock and 22" stainless barrel.

Bushnell 3-9*32 scope.

Shoots sub MOA at 50 yards.

I haven't done anything to my Wal-Mart Special except mount a 'scope that I later removed. I have also heard good thing about Savage/Stevens bolt actions and the NEF.
