I have had 3 Marlins, first a #7000..very accurate..but gave to a grandson, then a #60..good shooter, but went to another grandson (I make a habit of that)..now have a #795 accuracy potential is good, but the trigger is a real bummer.
I am surprised that only Spirithawk strongly recomended the Savage #64, although 2 others mentioned it in passing. Savage has been showing much "best out of the box" in recent years in both rim and centerfire. I believe if I were buying a standard priced semi-auto today and planned on keeping it stock..I would go with the Savage.
That being said, I have recently been contemplating trading my 795 for a 10/22...and I will be doing the "whole enchilada" trteatment.
I do have a "first year (1964)" model 10/22 with a 4-digit serial#..which will shoot with the best of them...but I will not be modifying that in any way.
I will admit that in my experience, although the marlins have not given me any serious problems feeding rounds, I think the 10/22 is probably the most reliable feeder in stock form.
I built up a 10/22 years ago and found that a Bentz chamber can be a bit more picky during feeding, than a stock barrel.
Below, see a current Savage #64, TRR-SR.. MSRP $315... should be able to find somewhere @ about $250..and as a stock rifle should be very accurete after break-in.
