I have notticed on my mossberg 835 ( woodland camo) that the finnish is starting to wheare at the porting, I now have little circles around the porting holes. is this normal? This is the same on both the slug barrel and the shot barrel.

How old is it? Mine's not very old but I've had a few boxes through it. No wear yet but it is blued rather than camo.

My .357 is ported and there's scorch marks on the SS that I can't clean off (too hard to get in there). Are yours shiney metal circles or dark scorch marks?

it is a few years old I bout it used but he only shot a few shells out of it and decided that the 31/2 was to much for him ( he was an older small framed man)  I have shot it about 500 times between the slugs and shot shells. the circles are brown in color so they are more then likely scorch marks of rust where the finish is coming off.

I wonder if it's burning the paint job.

Rust should show up on a clean moist patch. But if it's burning your paint job I imagine it will be removing my blueing. I probably have less than 100rnds through mine so far.

I was in my local Gander Mountain store a few weeks ago and saw 4 used 835's, and no 500's.  Are the model 835 a problem, or was it just a fluke that there were 4 of the other model?

Thanks

By buddy just bought an 835 for $180.00 .IT came with some kind of turkey choke that has adjustable sites on it.The sites will move to center of shot pattern. He had one and sold it.wanted another, the guy could not handle 3 1/2" shells?? Bargain huh!!!!

I have the "parkerized" finish on  my 835, and have fired around 2000 rounds through it with no sign of any finish damage. The Mossbergs come with a 10 year warranty, perhaps you should contact Mossberg. They may get you to send that barrel back to them, and refinish it, or send you a new barrel. You are using it with the choke tube screwed in aren't you? Just a thought...

I have to admit the 3.5" shells with a heavy waterfowl load kick like the   devil. You have to really be in a situation like pass shooting geese, before you need that kind of punishment.

Whitecloud. Adjustable sights?? I'd like to learn more about those. Dose he have beads that screw up and down or what?? I could turn my Mossy into a trap gun if I could do that! Trap guns usually pattern on the high side. Say 70% top, 30% bottom. This allows you to shoot a rising target, without having to cover the target, with the barrel, like most field guns.

I have  found the finish "burned" on both my slug barrel and my shot barrel. the slug barrel is fully rifled with scope mount so no choke tube for this barrel and the shot barrel normally has the extra full turkey choke in it not that it will make much difference the porting sits about 2 inches back from the end of the barrel.

I mostly use this gun for spring turkey, dove, and a little deer hunting.
all my smal game hunting and most of the deer hunting is done with handguns.

it is lucky to get 100 shots trough it a year and this incliudes sight in shots and a lot less if I dont hunt doves

HMMM?
The only thing I can think of is that the tighter choke of a turkey tube, and the hotter loads of the slugs, may be causing an extremely hot ,exhaust, lets call it, out of the port holes. This may cause the burning.

Call Mossberg service, or email them. They have been good in answering any questions that I've had. (emails take a few days)
